The tread on most mountain bike tires are not intended for pavement routes---and the fatter they are the more DRAG it makes for the rider----thus the slick tires are an option ( 1.5 - 2.00 are the available sizes). Test brands like Hutchinson, Kenda, Ritchey and Specialized----others puncture fast while in the long run ( And bring some sealants for emergency situations) .

You will notice a marked difference in handling, speed, and effort. Depending on how knobby the tires are, slicks are 10-30% more efficient. This may be odd, but the slicks are also quieter as the go across the road. If you're only riding on the road, MTB tires are a waste. They're heavy, not great traction (less surface area on the road), and noisy. If you have a recent MTB with suspension, that also is somewhat of a waste on the road. The suspension is made to absorb shocks of offroad, and the more suspension the bike has, the more power you turn out is expended on the suspension.

Smoother and Faster!!!

I would however, caustion against going smaller that a 1.5...

It really takes the top end out of you bike to go smaller - a mountain bike has a hard enough time with top end speed!
