Try to get your mind off of yourself and instead put your focus on the other person. Most people like to talk about themselves. If you are sitting/standing next to someone, try making a remark about the nice shirt, etc. he/she has on. Ask where they found it, etc. Tell them their hairstyle is really neat--who cuts your hair, etc. By focusing on someone else, you will not be so self conscious about yourself. It takes some practice, but you can do it. Usually people become closer friends when they have interests in common. What do you like to do? Take a class, go to church, join a reading group, etc. and you will meet people with common interests there. Good luck.

i know how it is, i'm shy too. it was really hard for me to talk in front of a crowd or with a bunch of people. I don't think I will ever be popular but I try and try everyday. I started to have more friends this past few months because I kept saying o myself "Come on, you can do this. Just say it, say it." And yeah they just popped out of my mouth. Take theatre. This girl she said that she was really shy and then she started acting and being in front of the crowd and now she has confident in herself, shy no more lol.
Make some friends, some shy ones. i sometimes never speak in class but when i met this shy girl and quiet like me, I just stopped being shy because I have a friend with me.
P.S. Good luck and don't be shy anymore because you'll never know what you can actually do.

Start doing volunteering work at some places where there are animals. Concentrating your focus on the animals will be easy for you to stop being shy. Try the local SPCA. Gradually you will be ok with making friends. Practice makes perfect.

me too. I read too much which doesn't help. But I joined a karate class and eventually began teaching which helped alot. I also got a job as a waitress, that has helped TONS! I suggest you get involved in something that involves social contact.

Pretend your talking to someone close to you....like a relative. It's not a bad thing to be shy. I'ts a nice quality if you use it to your advantage. You may be seen as attractive.
