To know thyself is to know the world. And knowledge is power. This famous Socratic dictum is the theme of Hindu philosophy which is practised since time immemorial; that is much before Socrates was born.
To know the self and merge the self with the out side world is the central theme of Hindu philosophy which is also a science which can be put to practice. The knowledge about the out side world is mere collection of data in the hardware called memory and is not knowledge, if can not be put to use. Once the collected knowledge is assimilated with experience, it becomes wisdom.
The wisdom realised is self-realisation when the man, that is the microcosm sees the macrocosm or the universe within himself. In Sanskrit it is said: 'Yatha Pinde, Tatha Bramhande'.

Realisation of the universe is a very difficult thing to do . It is told that if you realise yourself , the whole universe is within you .
So a person is to realise himself to understand the whole universe.
The process of self realisation prepares oneself to become as broad and wide as the universe , to realise the ultimate.

There is no difference. There is no separation between us and the universe. We are part of the universe in a literal and scientific manner as well as in a spiritual one.
The physical separation between all objects is an illusion. This isn't my opinion - it's quantum physics.
