I just got a 4 yr old golden retreiver. He is beautiful and sweet. Only one problem, he will not go outside without a fight. He is 100+ pounds and I'm this little person trying to shove him out the door. I don't know why he is so scared. He doesn't look or act odd beyond that. He's potty trained for the most part, he had an accident one day but I'm not sure if that was my fault or his. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I forgot to mention that I have tried persuading him with foods and doggy toys, but it still doesn't work. And I know I shouldn't push him out the door and I don't harm him in the process, but if I don't I'm afraid he'll pee on the floor.

go outside while leaving the door open, the dog may come and join you after he feels it is OK. Next effort, if that fails to get him out, is to get some yummies, cheese is good, or anything the dog really likes, and go out again leaving the door open, the dog should come out just to get the goodies, with some daily trips, he should get over this shyness. Just wondering, did the dog ever have a bad experience while outside, like getting attacked by another dog or beaten or things like that?

A few suggestions. 1) throw one of his favorite treats/toys out the door, then he will probably follow. 2) He might not like the surface outside the door, so try a soft, carpet-like mat right in front of the door. 3) Your dog should enjoy going outside. Try to find out why he doesn't, and solve it!

Some dogs are scared of certain surfaces. For example, I had a k9 that was scared of tile flooring. Have you tried putting down an outdoor mat, and a mat near the door, in case your dog is uncomfortable on slippery or smooth surfaces?

Are you trying to get him out into the back yard to do his business, if so then try asking him if there is any kitty cats out the back. If he is as protective of his yard as my dog is of his yard then he will be at the back door before you are, but try taking him for walks since he would love to go out and be able to play with the other dogs in your area especially if he's a friendly dog when he meets other dogs.

My dogs never hesitate to go outdoors, however my mom's dog hates to go out back she prefers to go for a walk on the leash. When my moms dog refuses to go out the back door she will stand at the front door with the leash and then walk her to the back door and put her out in the yard. Then when she lets her back in she gives her a biscuit for being a good girl.

i also have golden retriver but he never had a problem with goin outside. but maybe when its time to go outside you should go with him to comfort him, maybe he's scared of something in the backyard for some reason. naturaly golden retrivers are out going out doors kinda of dogs but sometimes they can be scared of a lot of things. Don't make going outside a bad thing, make it a point to go out with it and maybe play around so that it will think of outside as a positive thing. If you dont go walking with your puppy yet maybe you could try that so that it will get use to the out doors so you and your dog can get some fresh air and exercise.

entice him with food, his nose will pick up the scent and he will follow it, shoving a dog out the door is not the right thing to do
