could be a disc or nerve problem..make him go to a doctor..he could end up with a very serious spinal injury

Try a heating pad to relax the muscles

Start out taking some pain medication like Aleve or Motrin. This will help him to relax a little bit. Make sure he takes it while working too. Read the labels for dosages. To relieve immediate pain, take an ice pack or a bag of frozen veggies (like peas, corn), wrap it in a wet cloth and place it on the sore spot OVER his t-shirt. Do not apply directly to the skin. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes. He may reapply the cold pack every 20 minutes AFTER taking off the last cold pack. For instance he puts the cold pack on at 5 p.m. and removes it at 5:15 pm. He may reapply the cold pack to the same area at 5:35 p.m.(20 minutes later) Using a cold pack upon coming home everyday from work will be the best thing to help bring down the pain level. He may use a warm pack before going to bed ONLY IF the muscles that hurt are NOT warm to the touch. If the muscles in his back are warm to the touch, then he should stick with cold packs until he can go to the doctor. Next, buy him a back brace from Wal Mart. This will help to protect his back while lifting. They can be as inexpensive as $12.00 or so.
Lastly, lifting instructions. Because his back is hurt, he needs to make sure that he is BENDING his knees while lifting. He needs to bend like he is squatting for weight lifting. This technique alleviates the stress on the back muscles and let the strong muscles of the thighs do most of the work. Make sure he holds the heavy items he is lifting close to his abdomen. And DO NOT reach out with ANYTHING in his hands. This will kill his back.
I hope this helps until he can see the doctor.

Heat. Wet a towel & nuke it then apply to painful areas. heating pads work great too. A back vibrator helps too. Cold is not what he needs. I have degenerative spinal disease & have experienced a lot of bad back pain. I was told never use cold packs, always heat. He'll have to tuff it out till he gets to a Dr.

The treatment of lumbar strain consists of resting the back (to avoid re-injury), medications to relieve pain and muscle spasm, local heat applications, massage, and eventual (after the acute episode resolves) reconditioning exercises to strengthen the low back and abdominal muscles. Long periods of inactivity in bed are no longer promoted as this treatment may actually slow recovery. Spinal manipulation for periods of up to 1 month has been found helpful in some patients that do not have signs of nerve irritation. Future injury is avoided by using back protection techniques during activities and support devices as needed at home or work.

The ibuprofen stops the anguish, the progesterone fixes the challenge for the following time round, for me a minimum of.
