From Shannon, two places that shouldn't be missed a Burren Tour and a visit to the Aran Islands. I believe buses run from the city center around 10am daily for tours of the Burren for around 20 Euros. The trip includes a stop at the Cliffs of Moher, Dunguaire castle, the Ailwee caves, and Galway Bay Lighthouse. The Burren itself consists of several acres of limestone with amazing plants and animal species and tombs and rock formations similar to Stonehenge. Ferries also run 2 or three times a day from the bay to the Aran Islands. There you can see villages that have maintained life as the Irish have for centuries. Even the Irish language has been preserved, and you will hear the locals speaking in Gaelic. There are forts and tombs there that date back to B.C. Both the Burren and Aran Is. are great places to enjoy history and nature.
