My 19 month old is getting ear tubes tomorrow. :( Im just wondering how other kids reacted after they got ear tubes. Did they seem like they were in pain afterwards? Were they groggy all day? Just want to have an idea of what to expect.

Yes we did tubes, and it will depend on your child as to whether or not your child is groggy. My son had something called giggle juice before the proceedure was done. He came out of the surgery cranky. He was eight mounths old when they did the tubes. He has had many other surgeries because he has deformaties. He used to come out fighting made, but now he is very calm. It just depends on the child.

There is some pain involved. Some doctors use morphene and some don't they give them tylonal extra strength or tylonal with codine in it. That will make your child sleep, but my son had an adverse affect to it, and it made him hyper instead of sleepy.

The anithesia will take a while to completely wear off and you will have to keep an eye on your child, they will likely tell you no food or drink until after a certain time, this is because of post oprative vomiting. My son has only experianced that once after a surgery but not the one with tubes in his ears.

The main thing is, it is ok to be afraid. I know Iwas going to tell you everything will be OK, and it likely will, but anytime a child goes to surgery it is a big deal and you need to know at all times what is going into your babies body. You need to know how much and ask the nurse if the medication fits the height and weight requirement. Write down how much the child was given and at what time. These are impairative things to know. Most of all, do not take your child home after surgery unless you feel comfortable and safe to do so. If you are scarred because of a reaction your child is having, request that your child stay the night. There is no harm in this and it is not being over pertective, it is being cautious and with good reason.

Your child will be fine and the surgery is very quick. We have done tubs only once thank the lord. So do exactly as the doctor tells you. Take time for yourself, and make sure you eat early in the morning because you need to keep your strength for your baby. I can understand not eating when your child cannot, as I refrain from it when my child is having surgery, but I do eat when he is asleep or not looking. It may only be a little. Breath deep. I am praying for your little one.

My oldest daughter had tubes in her ears when she was 8 mths old. The best thing I ever did!!! She had one ear infection after that, and there was no pain because the tubes allowed the fluid to drain out, it was actually pretty disgusting, but we used the drops the doctor gave us and the infection cleared up right away. They fell out when she was about 4 and have never had any problems since.
The worst part of the whole thing was my nerves. They took her in and she was back in my arms in less than 10 minutes, and back to herself within and hour. No pain, she wasn't groggy just a little quiet. Hope this helps

My daughter was a very happy baby after she got tubes in her ears. the day after her surgery she was crawling and laughing and playing with others like nothing ever happened!! the tubes just make them feel better and they have no pain after but many kids react different. After the surgery they will only want mama for a while! They will feel the pressure of the drops and they will hate keeping the ears covered. But many kids will feel better the day after. GOOD LUCK!!

I'm glad you're feeling better, I'll share my daughter's experience.

She was 13 months old when she got her tubes, they fell out, then she got another set when she was just a couple of months short of 3. She sailed through both surgeries. Granted, she's almost 17 now, but both times (different docs too) it took them about 15 minutes to do the procedure. My husband and I had just barely checked into the surgery waiting room, when the doc would come and tell us she was out of surgery. About an hour later, she was awake in recovery, and obviously not too horribly comfortable, but more from the anesthesia than the acutal surgery. We took her home within another couple of hours. The first one, we took her to Chuck E Cheese that very night for my youngest brother's birthday (I think he was 9), the 2nd one she went to her mother's day out program the next morning. It's really a very simple procedure, and your child should be just fine. It's seriously worse for you as the parent than it is for the child. Good luck!

My youngest had to have tubes in his ears when he was 18 months old. He was groggy most of the day after surgery. He had no problems with the tubes, just had to remember to put the things in his ears when he took a bath (to keep water out of his ears). To make things easier, I got the neon colored ear plug things, this way I could see easily if they fell out in the tub and couldn't forget to take them out. The tubes eventually fell out and the eardrums healed on their own. It helped him so much, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My daughter had her tonsils out and tubes put in at once. She complained more about her throat than anything. She came home the same day and slept about 7hrs. Her ears were tender for a few days and we had to be careful to put the cotton in and not get water in them when she took a bath. She took Tylenol for the discomfort but it really didn't hurt, they were just sore. Good luck!

I had them when I was 7. I remember being groggy and a little sore (because I got my adenoids out, too), but otherwise just fine. I was home by that evening ... And I could hear!

It is a very fast procedure and I do mean fast. They perk up pretty fast. It will be the best thing you ever do.
