How do I obtain my deceased Mother's SS#? I recently found on one of those treasure hunt searches that she had an insurance policy (small $ amount) and I need her number to get the cash from the insurance company. No old papers exist other than a few treasured birthday cards she sent me.

Try the Social Security Death Index.

You can do a search by her name. You might have to try it without her middle name or just a middle initial. Also try the advanced search feature.

Link below.

Once you find her, the SS number will be listed on there.

Death certificate will have ss# on there if you have that.. Otherwise call social security at 1-800-772-1213, or go to there website www.ssa.gov or contact the vital records dept in the area that she passed away..

The easiest way would be for the executor of her estate to go to her old bank - they'll have it on file. Otherwise, the executor could go to the local ss office, with a copy of the court papers and her death certificate.

Try Social Security Administration. You will probably have to prove kinship to get her number but a birth certificate should take care of that.

I agree with sissyd. To claim her insurance policy, you will probably need the death certificate as well to prove that she has passed of natural causes or a cause that was not suicidal.
