Whenever I eat fish I always feel so happy. Is it because of the Omega 3, and if it is, will taking Omega 3 supplements help with depression?

I could answer the question myself, but these sites describe it much better than I could-

Doubtful that it does. I think the reason that the rumor of it came about was studies that fish eating cultures are less depressed, but consider the cultures that subsist on a fish diet. They are poor and they work hard, this may sound depressing, but in truth, the harder people work the happier they are. In fact, "society" is a major cause of depression. If you take away all the stress of bills, and nonsense. The fish eating guy in the rural china/japan only worries about where his food is coming from, and doesnt overtax his mind on things that werent meant to be worried over.

The thought of eating fish has just the opposite effect on me. . .blah! I'm all for those who enjoy it, but I'm not one of them.

You probably need to talk to a doctor before starting Omega 3 suppliments, but I doubt that it would hurt you. And even thought I've never heard of it being used as an anti-depressant, each person's body differs in what it needs.

I'd say talk to your doctor, and if s/he approves, give it a try.

It does make me happy, but I don't think it's the Omega 3's. For me it's the fact that I live in a place with fresh seafood now, and it's so amazing. It's a thrill every time to pick up FRESH seafood. And the dishes are so so much better!

well probably , hypothetically speaking it could be the omega, or maybe you`re just feeling high, no offense. also it could be the food, maybe it just taste good. another reason could be the iodine in the fish which, iouno makes you feel happy. but probably its because of the omega.

"Depression is lower in populations with higher fish consumption.

Fats as major structural components of brain tissue are special because they contain DHA, which are in very limited quantities in the body.

On the other hand, fish fat contains high levels of DHA... and DHA is considered essential in the proper functioning of the brain..."

That is a bloody good question and I think you are right!

(I don't actually feel happy when I eat fish though I thoroughly enjoy it!)

Not sure why, but I get exactly the same feeling -- it s a sort of minor high. I m glad someone else has noticed this. Maybe we both need the iodine???
