I'm getting married in September. For the Rehersal we are going to have Stake and Shrimp and Chicken Strips for the kids. There are going to be about 50 people there and we're having a hard time figuring out how many pounds of shrimp we need. We're going to boil them in a big fryer with potatos, corn, mushrooms and sausage. His Mom said that she would just get 200 lbs. But we think that is way to much. I mean we're haveing the stake and baked potatos, etc. Some of my family doesn't even eat sea food. How many pounds of shrimp do you think we need for 50 people?

You can break it down by first deciding how many shrimp should land on a plate. For instance, if 8 shrimp per person would do it, and there's about 50 shrimp in a pound if you get medium, then that's only about 8 pounds..You'd plan for all 50 people because some gluttonous ones will make up for the ones who don't eat seafood. But I don't get why 50 people are coming to the rehearsal dinner? Traditionally it's just for the wedding party. You rehearse, and then you go out to dinner after the rehearsal.

Shrimp Sizes

* Extra Colossal = Less than 10 per pound
* Colossal = Less than 15 per pound
* Extra Jumbo = 16 to 20 per pound
* Jumbo = 21 to 25 per pound
* Extra Large = 26 to 30 per pound
* Large = 31 to 40 per pound
* Medium Large = 36 to 40 per pound
* Medium 41 to 50 per pound
* Small 51 to 60 per pound
* Extra Small 61 to 70 per pound
* Tiny = Over 70 per pound

I have always heard to get 1/2 a pound of shrimp per person, but that was if they were to be fried. You can eat more boiled shrimp that you can fried so you would actually need more than 1/2 pound per person, but since you are having steak and sausage, 1/2 per person would probably be okay. But you could get a few extra pounds to be on the safe side.

Half of a pound per person would be generous - especially with all of the other food you will have. Gee, do you have room for one more? It sounds yummers!
