Whether we (Or our families)came to America by choice on a ship as an immigrant, or were forced to come as slaves, we are here now. All in the same boat. So it is in all of our best interest to work to make certain this "boat" thrives and does not sink.

We all have differences in family backgrounds, beliefs, race, religion, social status, education, ethnicity, ancestral history, etc. We live together in this country (or on the planet) and must learn to be tolerant, value our differences, help each other, learn from each other, love one another, and work together for the common good.

I would say it's in reference to the slave trade an African Americans heritage. It may have been a plea for blacks to stop all the infighting. It could've been a plea for blacks to join together in their fight for civil rights. That's what I'd take from it.
