It sounds as though you are causing something bad to happen to the gums like an allergic reaction or a chemical burn.
Some people have sensative mouths (i'm allergic to colgate toothpaste) so stop using the BAking soda as often and see if it helps with the irritation.
How much Baking soda are you Using? Cut down on the amount and see how your Gums react to just a little.
If you don't see a reduction in the irritation and white color than stop using the baking soda, because there are others ways to get your teeth white without damaging your gums. HAve you tried the strips, gels, cover, paint ons, and baking Soda toothpaste?

You're damaging your gums!!!!! Your mouth is reacting to being "burned" by the baking soda, and unless you want your teeth to start falling out because of damaged gums, I'd cut back to brushing with B.S. only once a week.

Your gums are irritated. Do you want gums or white teeth? If you want them to stay white don't consume things that discolor them. Like soda, kool-aid and coffee.
