to help them understand the difference between fiction and non-fiction.

If there are talking animals, it is fiction.

If there are dead people who are doing anything other than decomposing, it is fiction.

If there are magical or supernatural events, it is fiction.

If there are imaginary places that no one has seen or that no one can give you the precise location of, it is fiction.

If books or movies contain any of the above elements, they are not to be taken seriously.

If someone presents them to you as factual, they are liars or they themselves have been deceived by liars.

Books may contain speculation, conjecture and even hypotheses without being fiction. If the book contains any of the elements previously mentioned, they are not conjecture, but fiction.

What do you think of my simple rules for simple fools?

Feel free to add your own.

I think your simple rules are lacking.

Some animals do talk. Some birds can talk, and it's been suggested recently that some of them can actually understand some of what they are saying. This has been shown by being able to identify a color, a shape, or a quantity. This shows that the bird is capable of understanding a question, and is able to correlate the question with the specific situation and objects. If some animals are capable of this, it stands to reason that we may not fully understand the capabilities of all animals. Too, some animals, in particular elephants have been shown to exhibit emotion. You need to be careful when you state categorically what animals are and are not capable of.

Some "dead" people have done more than decompose. Some, after having been declared dead have actually returned to life. Perhaps we don't fully understand exactly when "dead" is, but that's something we might learn a bit more about. Still, once the head's removed from the body, it's not going back on, and you won't see that person walking around the next day.

As far as imaginary places, there are many that were thought of as such that have actually been found. A thing being myth doesn't necessarily mean it's not real. Many cities in biblical times have actually been found, and it's likely that more shall be in the future.

Books, such as the Bible must be taken seriously partially because they do have real historical elements, among the mystical ones. They are not fiction partly because of the real elements, and partly because fiction is a category distinct from spirituality. Fiction refers to books intended for entertainment purposes. They are intentionally not true, and are not inteded for instruction or spiritual purposes. Such works include Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. The Bible, the Koran, the Tao Te Ching are a separate category. While the historicity of these books may be argued, they are not intended for entertainment, but spiritual purposes, and therefore are not classified as fiction. They have specific places in the Dewey Decimal system. Note too, that they are not classified as "history" or "science". The Dewey system makes no claim as to the factual nature of such books, but the purpose of the book separates them from being works of fiction.

Poetry may contain all of the above elements, and still it is not fiction, but poetry. This is yet another classification of books.

The Bible, too, is not a single book. Many people take it as such, but it isn't. It is a compilation of books, a "canon" to be exact, which contains many books on many subjects, for many different purposes. Much of the Bible is historically accurate. It is actually a valid source of historical documentation for many purposes, and much of what is written in it has either been verified externally, or has itself verified other documents. It is far from historically worthless. The lists of rulers in various areas, and certain events is far from inaccurate.

Parts of the Bible are more fable. Every culture has had creation myths. The fact that they don't accurately reflect modern scientific views does not make them fiction. It is merely a tool for helping people to find their place in a world that they didn't understand at the time.

The ancient Romans and greeks had their myths and religions as well. These tales, and others like them, are another category of writing. This is called literature. This category may be fabrication or fact. It's nature though, is quite different from fiction. Where fiction is entertainment, literature becomes art. It could be considered writing for writing's sake. Such works would include Shakespeare and others. Perhaps Nabokov, the tragedies of Greece and others.

The point is that in trying to call the Bible fiction, you are misunderstanding fiction. You could certainly call the Bible "myth" or "mythology", and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong. It is modern mythology, but calling something "myth" doesn't necessarily make it false. Myths can be true or false.

So, while you may disagree with the veracity of the Bible, your belief ultimately has no bearing on how that book (or collection thereof) may be categorized. That's already been done in libraries for quite some time. The classification of the Bible is not judgemental at all. It is neither "fiction", nor "science", nor "history". It is a Bible, with its own classification as a spiritual book. This is where it belongs.

They work on an academic level only. Not that that's a bad thing. Given what people have done and continue to do in the name of what one might call "fantasy-fact," or "delusional-fact," adherence to academic approach would serve the global community well. But having said that...

Truth, morality and ethics are ever changing. This is also not a bad thing. It is as a result of our perception. In other words, people living in Medieval times believed the world was flat because that was how it was perceived. They had no additional information to add to that perception or change it. For them, the earth being flat was as true as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west.

We now know that the earth is a sphere. At the same time, we still perceive it as flat in our daily lives because we see it and feel it as flat under our feet. We can accept the truth of both concepts because it is a result of what we have learned and what we experience at the same time. Therefore...

Pure academia is not enough. It negates one of the elements of human nature that cannot be measured, adequately defined. or quantified. That being, creativity. Creativity is the impetus of our ability to express who we are, and act on the musings of our wonder. Everything of value to us has its genesis in creative impetus. Consequently, what might be in the realm of the fool today, might well be considered genius in future.

Do you really think so? Here's you an answer from "dead" man. I grew up "mean" with an alcoholic father who ran around with "mafia." Later in life, I myself worked for them and at at early age (13 1/2) became a drug dealer. By the age of 17 I was one of the most "highly" respected in OC out of Detroit. At the age of 22, I was out on my motorcycle, drunk as a skunk and "applied" the wrong brakes at 80 MPH and flew head first unto the highway. NO BODY could find me for "4" hours, as they found the motorcycle all covered in blood. So "where" did I go? A "place" I can only describe where "God" is. Heaven, hell, but on the "other" side of "reality" as I could "see" this world as though through a sheet of plastic but "there." A "voice" called out to me. It said "if" I wanted a "chance." A chance because I had never had one. If I didn't want it, I would go to hell, or take the chance and "return" to the living "as" an example. An "example" to help change lives. After I "returned" I neither drank, took drugs and gave up the life of OC, NOT without "resistance." But at the age of 19 I had "also" been Marine Special Forces during Vietnam, so nobody gave me any "guff." You think you know it all. I "thought" I did too at one time, and since my "change" many, including law enforcement, couldn't believe for "years" I was the same person. Think God doesn't "exist?" One day you yourself will find out the truth............I sure "did."

The smart guy, frequently thinks with care the call assigned "fool" is frequently the single that takes the dare. grow to be it the smart guy who theory approximately flight or the fool who took the prospect, musing over a hovering kite? that took us to the skies like birds or extra the engineers, who designed the techniques with books crammed with words? As an aside, awareness is oftentimes won by way of journey, yet information might take the applying of such, yet that may not the case.

I have a good rule to add...
If you are trying to disprove others beliefs, you are narrow minded.
Did you like that one???
I have a suggestion, let people believe what they want. Who are you to have the final say on every single thing that is fact and fiction???? Sounds like you have a little work of fiction there yourself.

Books that insist you or something you do is faulty in someway, the only evidence being the text of the book itself.

Hows that fit in?
