Ok here is the biggest question. How many miles a year do you drive? where do you drive? how long do you normally keep a car? All three are decent cars. The Mazda 3 is a little smaller then the other two. The suburu is all wheel drive. great in snow belt area but a gas guzzler in areas that all wheel drive is not needed. Pros and cons
Mazda 3 good car, Ford owns mazda and the ford Focus shares some of the same componants as does the Volvo. Little more expensive for parts and might cost more to insure then the mercury
The Milan's Mazda cousin is the mazda 6 also cousin of the Volvo, the lincoln and the Ford Fusion. If you need all wheel drive the Milan has it as an option. if you don't then don't do it cause it costs more to buy, to maintain and gas mileage suffers.
The subaru id a good car, a littl pricy , does not crash as well and when it does go bump the parts can be hard to find and a litlle high priced. A fender for a Subaru is about 25% more then a fender on a Mercury.
Since Im not you I can't deside for you. We go by total cents per mile operation cost over the expected life of the vehicle. If you care about that go with the Mercury. If you don't and you think the Legacy has better features then but that. The Mazda 3 is a different size car and I can't see how you can compaire it to these others. I would drive a Milan. good all around car, crashes well, cheep to operate.

well all 3 have above ave to excellent reliability,i think it will all depend on what you are looking for in a car if you want sporty you go with either mazda 3,or subaru legacy, you want something that looks appealing and luxurious go with mercury, but for me overall i would go for subaru its not only reliable its also has 5 star safety features as well as an AWD feature,it has big luggage space plus it can tow 2700 lbs! which is really huge for a car, its subaru hands down

Mercury you will live in the shop, worse than Ford.
Subaru is good but remember it is made by Fuji.
Mazda3 is Mazda even though Ford owns them, be my choice even being a non Ford guy.

Mazda3 shares the same frame system as the new Volvo S40, so it can't be a bad car.
