Also, wasn't Bruce Lee able to punch someone from only 1 inch away? That must be a tremendous level of acceleration! How many g's would it take to do that?

depends...how heavy is the other person how big is your fist how strong are you...it all depends

It isn't about G's or even acceleration, though these aspects play a role, it is minuscule at best. No, you can swing your arm around as fast as you can but that doesn't mean it would provide a powerful blow. The power that was generated by Bruce Lee's (let me get the story straight, Wing Chun is one style that Bruce studied that showed him how to do this he didn't "invent" this at all) wasn't generated in his hand, but his body.

After aligning you body behind your hand properly, and then moving your body through the target a powerful blow can be sustained from any distance from the target. this is how the 1" punch is achieved.

i don't know about speed, but my instructor can break two wood ed boards with a punch from 1 - 2 inches away!

So yes, Bruce being able to do that is likely!
