these planes were originally designed to be flown from the lighter than air ships (Macon and Akron) as defense and long range reconnaissance. since the planes were launched and recovered directly from the airships while in the air, they actually had no need for the landing gear. it was often removed to reduce weight, and increase its range in flight.

The landing gears were replaced with fuel tanks for increased range. Dont know if it was a smart thing, but the US Navy sure had the confidence of hooking them back in!

the designers didn't have the funds to include a landing gear.

Some were launched by airship, and big airplanes.
To achieve launching and recovery from the airship, a hook/anchor system was used.
