I was laid off and gave severance package. During this period, I was told if the company need help, I obligate to help. Meantime, I found another job. So I was receiving the package and working for another job. I was told you can deducte the commuting mileages for going to the second job. In this situation, I was wondering if I can deduct the mileage for going to the new job?

Not only can you NOT deduct for commuting mileage, most severance packages have a clause that, should you become employed, you will cease receiving benefits.

This might be one scenario where you would be better off letting sleeping dogs lie......

If you have two jobs and go directly from one to the other, you can deduct the mileage between the first and second jobs if you itemize. But you can't deduct the mileage from your home to the first job, or from your second job back home.

If your day looks like this, you can do a little:

Drive from home to job 1 (commuting--no deduction)
Drive from job 1 to job 2 (deductible as business miles)
Drive from job 2 back to home (commuting--no deduction)

Hope this explains things a little better.

You can't deduct mile for commuting, unless it's your business and you're writing off your vehicle - I think you got some tax regulations mixed.
