Hi everyone, please help! I have bought a toy poodle a months ago..he is about 4months old now. He keep coughing so badly and I am very worry. I have already toke him to the vet twice, and the vet prescribed him the same antibiotic twice. Today is his 5th day of taking the second bottle of antibiotic, but he still cough so badly and last night he cough almost the whole night. He will finished the antibiotic 5 days late, I am not sure if I should bring him to the vet now, or should wait until he finished the dosage....also, anyone know the possibly reason of his cough? The vet said that his lungs 'sounds' clear.

Oh dear...I had the same problem with my puggle. I got him when he was four months old, from a puppy store (calm down everyone, I'll never make that mistake again). He had a "previous" infection of kennel cough but was supposedly clear...within a few days of me taking him home he started coughing and sneezing a lot. My (former) vet did the same thing, kept prescribing the same antibiotic. First it was cough medicine, then a generic antibiotic. The coughing was reduced some, but never really went away. They took numerous x-rays of his lungs, and then prescribed him two different antibiotics, one of which was doxicycline. I took that crap when I was in the Army as an anti-malaria medication in Iraq...needless to say it made him throw up so I had to start giving him Pepcid along with it. After 4 solid months of him being on different antibiotics, I finally had enough and took him to a different vet. Bottom line: his lungs have scar tissue in them (probably from poor treatment for the kennel cough infection), and he will always have allergies now. He has been prescribed an antihistamine that only needs to be given if he has coughing episodes. He was needlessly on strong antibiotics for months. Please take your dog to a new vet.

Sounds like contagious tracheal bronchitits - commonly known as kennel cough. Both my shih tzus have had it in the past 2 weeks - one only mildly and the other quite severely. If it isn't that, it could be a heart problem, or he could have something stuck that he's picked up and eaten that you haven't seen. If you're still worried about the situation, and I know only too well the worry and distress it causes, not only to you but the poor little dog, visit another vet and get a second opinion. It would be worth it for your peace of mind. However, I hope your puppy is soon well again and you can enjoy your time with him. Good luck.

Sounds like kennel cough. Would take him back to the vet and ask what else he can do. Has he had all his shots? Maybe the vet can give you something to build up his system. Adopted a puppy that had distemper a week after I got him home and he survived with no problems but he had to be kept at the vet's for transfusions a few days. Nearly lost him. He's the happiest dog you've ever seen now.

It could be bordatella, also called canine cough. It is commonly spread through contact with other dogs, so if he's been at a kennel or anywhere with other dogs for an extended time, he may have caught it. You might wanna get another vet's opinion.

you shuld have noticed him getting better after 5 days of taking it. if i were you i would take him back to the vets as something is not right. maybe it would be a good idea to call the person you got him from and see if any of the other puppies have had it that she knows of. good luck i hope he gets better soon.

its your dog, not the vets dog, if you are still worried go back to the vet. If you are worried unnececerily then the vet hasn't done his job in reassuring you, if its un needed worry what have you lost by going back? only an ounce of your pride, you havent lost the puppy though.

Could it be possible that he has a collapsed trachea? I have a Pomeranian with this condition and it started with him coughing. He takes medication twice daily to keep it under control. He is now 12yrs old.

hmmm...i would consider talking to another vet. sometimes this is the only way to get things done.
another thing to consider...and this may sound odd to some of you out there....my dog has allergies and she coughs. she sounds like an 'old lady smoker'....but when i give her benadryl it goes away. one time (before i realized what it was) i thought she was dying. lucky for us it was only allergies.
