How do I get the half up half down hairstyle? (one with the poof)?

Look up pictures of Fergie at the grammys. From your description it sounds like that's what you are going for but with more of the sides down and a little less pony tail.
Use a good body shampoo, section off the crown (or top of the head) fold this down over your eyes, next take hair between your first and second finger and with a teasing comb start to tease from your fingers to your scalp. Remember, bigger is better in this case 'cause the hair hanging over your eyes is going back over the teased hair. Tease it as big as you want it and use a lot of hair spray. Bring pieces of hair from the sides of tour head and use bobby pins to make the hump. Style the rest of your hair and go. You have officially been humped! Hope this helps!

from the front of your forehead, collect about two inches of hair, horizontally, eyebrow to eyebrow, then collect enough hair from the middle of your top of the head and the front of the forehead, then pull the hair up and do a twist and while your doing the twist push the hair towards the front, this will create the "poof" secure with bobbypins or hair rubberbands, or both, i like bobbypins because I can never get my poof big enough but its a cute poof. this is normally my half up do if i leave my hair down. its the teased effect. { the look resembles my avatar, but its not like the elvis thing}

now that i think about your question i think your talking about the enlarged crown like in weddings with the hair pulled back, the only time i ever achieved this was by pulling a small amount of the top layer of my hair then pulling then against my head in the process of the half up do to tie it down while pushing it up to create the poof. then secure it with a hair rubberband. i think if you combine the first teased effect with the pulling the hair back effect you can achieve your desired look.. in french that poof is called a boufant (i think i spelled it right). Well start by putting your thumbs on top of your ears,under the hair, and drag them to your crown. clean up the part, and tie the bottom part back. Take the top part, and tease the hair from the crown about the middle of your head. then gently brush through the top layer, smoothing it down. Twist it, and tie it back with a pony tail. Take out the other pony tail, and there you go.

I don't get what you mean? Like your hair half up with a poof? If yes put half up with bangs/few sections out in front. Take those and put back. Hold in place with a barrette or bobby pin..

I have to say curls are the best way to go. You could put your hair in rollers for the day and when you let them down stick one or two pins in it to put back the front pieces you can twist back the pieces at the front and put in a pretty clip that matches the outfit or go to hair dresser hair pin in hand and get it one.
