I just can't. When I lie on my back so that my I use my diaphram and inhale the biggest breath I aim for Forte or Fortissimo, but can only go to Mezzo-forte without sounding like I'm yelling.

You can either sing or you can't. You were either born with vocal chords allowing you to sing (loudly, softly, on key, whatever) or you were not. You cannot make a good singer from someone who does not have the vocal chords to attain this. Wasting your money on years of voice lessons and instruction is a waste of more than money if you do not have the talent going into the thing. It would be like trying to become a first-rate gymnast if you don't have the build, flexibility, and talent in that area.

First you need to stand up. Better to use your natural voice range than over reach or yell. Enough people doing that already. Music should be melodious not a squawking contest.. Try going somewhere where you don't have to worry about bothering anyone and let er rip. OK?

there's an old song, don't know the name, (i heard it first on sesame street, i think) but a verse in it goes:

sing
sing a song
sing out loud
sing out strong

don't worry if it's not good enough
for anyone else to hear

just sing
sing a song

if you don't have a powerfull voice, that's what microphones and amps are for.

Don't work so hard. Just let yourself sing on the breath. If you force your diaphragm you are adding tension and reducing the resonance of your voice. It's not about muscle, it's about letting the voice do what it does.
