Are you even a soldier? This is a question for soldiers serving in Iraq as to how they feel about the attempt to set a deadline for leaving Iraq.

Were not in Iraq just for Iraqis so Army sarge, your "shithole" argument doesnt hold up, we are there to promote freedom. It is the front line of the war on terrorism. Im kinda surprised at these answers.

Other guy, what do you mean "mess we created" do you mean that in a negative way?

Explain more and I will answer.

Actually my father is a Sargent Major in the Army, so yes.

No, but I think I know fairly enough about what the Army really is about.

Anyways, I think its just like painting the target on our soldiers. We put a date, or some time period, and it gets put ont the web, and terrorist can find it. The attacks will go up, more people will die, and Bush will be blamed for it. I guess it happens a lot now.

I am a Soldier, so I feel qualified to answer this question.

I have mixed feelings. I really don't feel as though we are 'cutting and running' so much as we are asking the Iraqi people to finally step up to the plate and consider their own destinies. Should we have gone in there in the first place? I don't know...I have my opinions, but will not comment here. Is it right that we 'broke' their country (which in general was lawful in nature before we got there) in the interest of throwing out a dictator? Again, I don't know...the fact of the matter is, however, is their country is broken and it's our responsibility to fix it.

That being said...I have yet to go over there, but I have been around and talked to a LOT of people who have been right there in the midst of the action...doing QRF, convoy security, training Iraqi police/Army and more. The situation is ugly, and the Iraqis themselves are not helping matters much. There is both religious and secular violence in many provinces, and it's not just Iran that's fanning the flames on that. Iraqi police and Soldiers who have been trained by the US are not showing up for work, and often the ones that do show up are ineffective at best. We take a 18 year old kid straight out of high school, train him for 6 months and send him over there, and he does an outstanding job fighting for someone else's country...yet the Iraqi soldiers who are older and battle hardened (remember, they have lived around violence for the last 4+ years) can't seem to do the job, no matter how much training and how much money we pump into their fighting forces.

"Stay the course!" I've been hearing that since the 2004 elections...that's a great mantra, but how long is long enough? How long can we reasonably wait for the Iraqi people to start defending their own country? At what point do we tell them that enough is enough and they've got to do things on their own?

So, again, I'm of mixed feeling. If this bill does not get vetoed (doubtful!) I would be kind of curious to see how it plays out. I don't buy into the Republican rhetoric of it's going to send a message to the terrorists of defeat...It's just not that simple. I do think, however, it will send a message to the Iraqis to get their a*sses in gear and start taking control of their own country. We have spent 3+ years cleaning up the mess we made...how many more years is enough? I think if I were the Iraqi prime minister and I had a free Army that my tax revenue didn't have to pay for, I'd want us there as long as possible. Is that the right answer, though?

I guess time will tell.

To clarify: "Mess we made" You can interpret that any way that you want to. The fact of the matter is that prior to us arriving in Iraq, the lights were on, the roads and bridges led somewhere, there was infrastructure (such as running water and sewers), and there were not hundreds of thousands of folks headed out of the country as refugees. I am not trying to refute the argument made by many that all of the damage we did to that country was worth it...I don't have that much strength in my fingers to type that one out. What I am saying, however, is that the "coalition of the willing" did a lot to harm the Iraqi infrastructure, thus creating a "mess".

It's sickening that the Government that sent us to war is the SAME Government that wants to take away the funding. People were warned before going to the polls that this was going to happen with a Democratically controlled Congress. President Bush said that the War On Terrorism is going to take a long time. This isn't a war with standing armies facing each other on a big field. We have to ferret these terrorist ******* out one at a time.

I feel as though we've been sold out for the political ambitions of the Democrat party.....thrown in front of the bus in an attempt to sabotage our chances of victory. That's OK...we'll just have to win faster, and it will be all the sweeter...knocking off two enemies with one win. This only proves that Democrats own defeat....lock stock and barrel. They are now totally invested in trying to force a home-team defeat.

I wasn't aware Congress was doing any such thing. I was under the impression they're trying to work up enough backbone to finally get us out of a conflict we had no business getting into.
