Real whole wheat bread is good for you as it is a wonderful source of fiber. I say real, because you need to read the ingredients. Many times bread will be sold as "Wheat" yet it contains enriched flour as its first ingredient.
Now as to your friends weight loss, if all she was eating was tomatoes and whole wheat bread she was consuming about 100 or so calories with no fat for each meal. Sure, fast weight loss but guaranteed to put your body into starvation mode. Won't take her long to put those 10 pounds back on and then some. Not a smart way to lose weight.

RE:
is whole wheat bread fattening?
A friend of mine ate tomatoes on whole wheat bread for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday for a week and lost 10 pounds.
I always thought that any bread would be fattening..
Just wondering :]

Bread is a carboyhydrate. Carbohydrates give you energy. But there are good carbs, and bad carbs. White bread is bad carbs, brown bread is good carbs. Bad = breaks down quickly and of little nutritional value. Good = packed full of nutrients and fibre, fills you up for longer, energy is realeased slowly so as to avoid that 'slump' in energy levels. The best kind of bread is the one with a multitute of different wholegrains and mixed ground up seeds. Generally, the denser and heavier the bread is, the healthier it is for you. Check out the ingredients list when you buy bread. Enriched flour is not wholegrain, look for the words wholewheat and wholegrain. Also it seems to be impossible these days to buy bread without sugar. Sugar/glucose/fructose should be low (or non existent) on the ingredients list. Note: Any carbs that are not burnt off as energy will be stored as fat. Bread will give you the energy to move, so keep moving.

In general, 100% whole wheat/whole grain breads have more fiber than white bread or other breads made with wheat flour
Those people who are on diets are normally told to have higher fiber diets because, well fiber helps you poo.
