Once when my children were young I had a recipe for a mud cake using chocolate wafers and gummie worms.
I found one similar on the Internet as follows. You could use it as a guideline. Use your own ideas mixed in.
MUD CAKE
1 (20 oz.) pkg. Oreo cookies, crushed
3 (3 1/2 oz.) pkgs. instant chocolate pudding
2 (8 oz.) or 1 (16 oz.) Cool Whip
Gummy worms or bugs. Cookies could be flowers made with flower wire from arts and craft store. of course the dirt is made with crushed Oreo cookies.
Need a clay flower pot (10" or large) and garden spade and aluminum foil.
Make pudding following directions on box. Use clay pot, line with aluminum foil. Start layering, first third of pudding, then 1/3 Cool Whip. Last layer Oreo crumbs. Make several layers. Top layer is Oreo crumbs. Add a few gummy worms in each layer. Add silk flowers for effect. I say real cookies as above.

If its for elementary kids, you don't wanna get them all hyper do you?
my advce, use fruit
it can turn out really neat and the kids will love it, you can even dip some of the fruits on caramel or chocolate or anything else you can imagine
you should use crushed oreos for dirt still,
then a few gummy worms
then cut out flowers shaped fruit(with cookie cutters) pinnaples, apple slices work best i think
then maike leaves wirth honeydew/ cantelope
it will be so colorful
have fun with this and i hope i helped you

Some things you can use are bamboo skewers that you "paint" green with food color, great stems for sugar cookie flowers. Green gumdrops can be flattened out by rolling them between 2 sheets of wax paper with a good sprinkling of sugar. These can be cut into leaves for the flowers. Tint coconut green for grass. Check out foodtv.com they all kinds of good ideas.

Worm Cake

INGREDIENTS
1 (18.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
3 cups chocolate cookie crumbs
1 (16 ounce) package prepared chocolate frosting
1 (16 ounce) package gummi worms

DIRECTIONS
Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Pour batter into cupcake pans and bake as directed on cake mix box. Let cupcakes cool thoroughly before frosting.
Spread cupcakes lightly with chocolate icing. Sprinkle cookie crumbs on top.
Cut gummi worms in half (as many as you like). Put icing onto cut end of the worms and stick to the top of cupcakes. You can use as few or as many as will fit on each cupcake. Let icing set for 10 minutes and then enjoy.
