All of these 'stories' begin with the understanding of a present God. With that in the equation anything is possible, is that really that hard to understand?

I believe in Christ because you can see his works in your everday life. It is hard to believe that when you look at the structure of the solar system and you study the human anatomy that you would think that something like that came into existence by accident. I believe that it took someone with intelligence and a loving heart to create the human body and the world that we live in because everything has been placed just in the right place for us to be able to survive.
There have been evidence found of Noahs ark and other biblical stories that are in the bible. There is some proof to support the existance of a superior being watching over us. There is not going to be full proof of him as far seeing his picture posted on the internet as "Almighty God". Faith is things hoped for and things not seen. We operate by faith everyday. We have faith that the stoplight will change so traffic will be controlled. We have faith that our boss will not fire us when we get to work. We have faith that we will be able to get up in the morning with the alarm clock.
For christians, faith is what causes us to be able to believe in these stories. There is some evidence to prove that the stories are true. The bible says "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all of these things shall be added unto you". When you take the time to find God and see his glory and what he has to offer you for you to able to survive in life you find peace and understanding and you are willing to spend time with him and be able to read the stories and know that they are true. There are stories in the bible that have not come completely true today. The book of Revelation talks about the last days here on earth. Those days are coming. The warnings are in the bible and if you read the warning signs you will see that the stories are starting to come true and that Jesus will come back to earth to reveal himself in his full glory. For those that don't believe and are left here on earth after the rapture they will see God, but they will see the ugly and angry side of God. You see God today as a happy and content person : trees, sunlight, flowers, birds chirping ect. To see the wrath of God in his anger is the opposite. He has promised destruction to the earth and to the people that do not believe and refuse to accept him.
Have you thought about taking the time to research the stories of the bible and the truth? Maybe you should ask God to show you that he is present and holy on this earth. He will. When he does he will let you know that it is him that you were seeking and that he is there for you.

I believe in the Word of God, which is the Torah and the Bible. They tell us of the way that we, who are sinners and unable to 'earn' our way into Heaven or an eternal life. We can be reconciled to God and given eternal life, simply by believing and having faith that His Words are true and He is a Just and Eternal God.

The stories in the Torah and Bible are meant to show us how impossible it is for us to really think or believe that without faith in our Creator. We can not hope to have eternal life in His Kingdom. Noah's Ark tells that God at one time, decided that we were not worthy of His Kingdom. But He was won over by the faith of ONE man named Noah. So, He changed His mind about destroying us humans, whom He created in 'his image'.

Jonah and the whale is another way of telling us that God, will assign each person on this planet a purpose and give us a specific gift. IF we do not fulfill our purpose or we decide to waste the gift, we will be cut off from His presence and live in darkness for all eternity.

Miracles happen, even today. Things happen which doctors can't explain, not even with all their specialties and equipment. Men were not created 'by' clay. But we are made of the ground we came from. "Ashes to ashes and dust to dust."

I often wonder why people would rather believe, that this is all there is to life - you are born, grow-up, die, and that is the end of your story. Seems kind of boring and depressing to me. I'd rather have faith in God and KNOW that my future is not determined or defined by Life in the HERE-AND-NOW!

I have an eternal future to look forward to, and one day all this stress, war, hate, heartache, and hostility will End forever.

Isn't that a better future for your children, than telling them -- "you are born, grow old, die, and that is it"?

Like I said, that is a boring and depressing future.

I have a hard time with the stories. So much in the bible is
spoken by someone other than God. I believe in God's
word. As far as miracles go, we see them happen everyday.
With modern science we can bring someone back to life
and people are cured when a doctor has given them a short time to live. I believe that life is a miracle in it self.

I am atheist, but I know someone who holds these beliefs:

My mother believes that the Bible is infallible and in every myth including Noah's ark and talking snakes. She rejects science and Harry Potter because she thinks witchcraft is real and secularism is the work of the devil. She expects the end of the world any year now.

It's quite barbaric and irrational to hold that kind of view on life, if you asked me.

I do believe in such things, though I don't know if you'll understand me. You might think I'm being vague.

What I know is that I feel i my heart it is true. To most Christians that sounds plausible, though most athiest of course scoff and brush it off as brainwash.

It's like this for most Christians. In the story of the Silver Chair by CS Lewis. The main characters, Puddlelum, Eustice, and "Pole" go in search of a lost prince and they find him being held captive in Underworld by a wicked witch. They attempt to free him and the witch interupts and attempts to stop them by casting an enchantment on them to hypnotise them into not beliving in Narnia (the Overworld to which the prince and puddleglum belong). She gives some very convincing arguments and makes them forget for the moment their memory of the place. Puddleglum, realizing he's being enchanted (though having already lost his memories) remembers in his heart that there is such a place, and while he somewhat agrees with the witch's arguments, he rufuses to let go of his hope to find and return to Narnia, even if it doesn't exist.

Modern Christians are like that. We don't have proof to appease all non-believers. We have hope. Hope of a making a better world through by the gospel of peace, and hope that our life and existance doesn't simply stop at death. Through that hope, springs faith. Faith that lets us believe in miracles, creation, the flood, and ressurection. As for eternal punishment, personally, I don't worry about it.

A lot of your contributors here talking about faith and describing miracles I agree with. But I'd like to add that I think that the warnings are for those who haven't sought God and His Son Jesus Christ yet. Those who have repented and taken God's gracious gift are looking and watching for the end of this world with anticipation. They know that Jesus will call them to meet Him in the sky to keep them safe from His wrath on evil people until He makes a new heavens and earth in which God's righteous kingdom will rule. His warnings can also be reminders to Christians to persevere till the end, be it when we die(God will resurrect us to eternal life) or if we are alive on earth when God's day(the end of the world) comes. Hence, we will be brought up to meet Jesus Christ in the clouds. Here's a question for you... how do you know that you'll take your next breath? Here's my answer on that... I can't see the air that I breath in but yet I breath it to stay alive. I don't worry about each breath I take because I have faith that the air is there for me to inhale. That's just one thing we do that we don't worry about or even think about unless we have a breathing illness like asthma or emphysema. Faith in unseen and yet if you know how to look for hope and faith in things seen it will help support and make stronger your faith. Like some others said, trees, grass, dirt, yes and air & gravity which we tend to take for granted. Just thinking on how wonderfully your're made will give you proof of an all mighty God who created you and all those other things, too.

Back when I used to be X-ian, I took it as a metapher, but about some of the answers: do you ppl realise that to say God violates natural law is to say He either didn't know He was going to need to do things a certain way, or to say He couldn't make rules that He wouldn't have to break later on, both of wich are blasphemeous?

Yes I believe all of that. And the reason why is simple: faith. His Word is true, it's as simple as that. His love is amazing. It's worth it to learn about this for yourself. Don't be so quick to call yourself an atheist. Learn more first. Learn it for yourself, not from what you hear or read from others. Don't miss out. Why? Why wouldn't you want to know more about Him? Why wouldn't you want to feel that love? Why don't you want to be sure...for yourself not just because it sounds cool to not believe. His ways are not the ways of the world. Remember that.

Because they are truth. Humans are made up of the same 7 elements found in dirt. Ask a scientist about it. Friend God never lies, and He created everything so if you want to be more than dirt, trust in Him,and He will give you,a new life. He will put His Spirt inside you and give you a desire for eternal things rather than earthly.
