do they even know you can see them? My dog looks at my face a lot. It looks like he looks at my eyes because he's aware that I can see through them but I'm not sure. My dad says animals don't think the way we do so it really doesn't know all that. However, why then does it look at me in my eyes sometimes? It doesn't look at my toes really. Are they aware what are senses do, like our nose, our eyes, our mouth, etc. How smart are they? And for that matter, how smart are other animals like lions and tigers? do they know?

The question is how smart are humans?

I have two dogs and they look me in the eyes for praise and acknowledgement. When they have done something wrong they will not look in at my eyes, anywhere but there. They know.

Humans need to reason everything out and make laws to state the obvious. Dogs just know. We actually have a geometric theorem that states "the shortest distance between two points is a straight line." Now try this, sit a dog down, put a steak thirty feet in front of him, and watch an animal make a straight line. A dog will not take a circular approach to anything. Shortest distance and no law or thereom needed.

Looking you in your eye is a dominance thing- if he stares you in the eye and does not look away, he is dominant in your relationship. If his eyes go up to you, and never stay quite right looking at your eyes, you are dominant.

Animals tell a lot by body language.Especially social animals- every social animal (including humans) will read the other animal constantly- he is looking- are you happy? do you have treats? are you going to pet me or yell at me? They read a lot through their senses- it is how they stayed alive when they were wild

As for lions and tigers- they read up on the confidence level as well. There is one zookeeper I have heard of (from a reputable source) that can walk straight up to a strange lion and hand inject it with meds- all because he walks in a confident matter and looks them in the eyes. He has the attitude- I can beat you if I wanted to, and the lions respect that.

Smartness is a relative term- how do you define it? A human can talk, read, write, etc. A dog doesn't need to do half those things. Plus, they can sift through a thousand different smells at one time, and identify them. I know I can't do that, so would the dog be smarter then?

My dog is really smart. All i have to do is ask her to show me an easy path through the woods and she does. She looks right in my eyes when i talk to her. All animals are smart. Lions and tigers rely on their wits to keep them alive in the wild. Animals know how to use their assests. They just don't catagorize them like we do. They got with flow.

I don't know about lions and tigers and bears..oh my..but you didn't ask about bears did you...Animals...esp. dogs can sense how we feel and can see us just like you can see them. They are wonderful creatures and are loyal and true. Of course they don't "think" the way we do..but they do have feelings and can relate to us .. They are very, very smart.. There is an old saying: you can beat a dog with a stick and he will still come and lick your hand....this is true loyalty and love........BUT don't ever, ever, ever do that to any animal.!!!!!!!

Your dog should not make eye contact with you for very long. DO NOT ever look away if your dog looks you in the eye. You stare them down until they look away. This establishes your dominance. If your dog is staring you in the face, he's being very defiant. Don't back down. Stare back until he gets the message.

So yeah, eye contact is important to dogs. They are perfectly aware of you watching them, and they know you can hear them and they assume you can smell them (though you probably can't). Your dog expects your observation of the world to be the same as his... that is, he thinks you both live in the same reality. You may not hear things that your dog can, and you may not smell things that your dog can, but he thinks you are aware of them.

a good question to ask a professional. but i'm guessing they do; dogs are pretty smart. it's kind of like the whole intuition for wild animals to hunt in the right places and for a certain type of food
