Does not beleiving in a higher God make one think of himself/herself as a god unto themselves? All the atheists I've known are far more smug than evangelicals, but always with this weird air of coldness - you get the impression they think they are above everything - even ordinary law. And no respect for others feelings.

I've never known an atheist like that.

Check to see if that person really is an atheist. I've known two or three people who call themselves atheists but believe in Heaven, Hell, the devil, reincarnation and/or the soul, etc. Such a person is not truly an atheist.

Anyway someone who is that smug does not represent true atheists, just as the smug and hateful Christians I know do not represent all the followers of that religion.

Because atheists must fellow after their god and their god is cold, unfair, ruthless, unfeeling, and judge mental, they can't help themselves.

If God is love , how can a non believing character resemble love.

That's what's sad about believing there isn't a God of love.

There are always two choices in life about every thing.

You either believe their is a God or you don't. You either believe in something or the other. Up or down, right or wrong, in or out. black or white, tell the truth or lie, live or die, heaven or hell

Nevertheless, love shall prevail every time whether you believe or not.

There is always someone who will see and some who won't, like the Flood.

And the Pharaoh thought the Israelites were chop suey until the Egyptians tried to pursue after them through the red sea. And what happened?

OPPS! to late!

Love prevails "no matter what!"

Great stereotype. Allow me to turn the tables to ensure you realize what you're doing:

If there is a God then why are evangelicals such cold people?

Does believing in a higher power make one think of themself as better than non-believers? All the evangelicals I've known are far more condescending than atheist and always seem to have an ability to be unempathetic. They run around shouting at everyone to conform to their ways while rarely objectively observing themselves and their "theories." They seem to want everyone to live in ignorance of objective experience.

You talk about not respecting anybody but your question reeks of disrespect. You can't generalize a whole group of people based on the actions of a few. If that were so then I could say that all Christians are cold hearted nasty mean arrogant people who are verbally abusive and disrespectful towards all non Christians and non religious people. But I wouldn't do that simply because it isn't true. I have met some very nice and caring Christians just as I have come across my share of mean Christians both on this forum and in real life. You need to start looking at things clearer and in an open minded way and not in a closed minded way.

Athiests have the same feeling of "I've got it all figured out" as Christians when they get "saved." Feeling like you've "got it all figured out" does give a person a sort of aire - that smugness you are describing. Often athiests have been very hurt and abused by the church, and when they finally come to terms with some sort of belief system (even if it's what they DON'T believe in), it feels GOOD to finally believe in SOMETHING, and differentiate who they are as opposed to someone else. Not all athiests act like they are above the law or have no respect for other's feelings... but there are some that do.

im not cold.

1. no. not beleiving in a god does not make one person beleive he/she is god. thats just idiotic. obviously if we dont beleive in a god were not going to beleive we are gods either. especially since we cant make breakfast burritos appear out of thin air....which would RULE!

2. smug? ask them why theyre smug. im willing to bet its not smugness.

3. im pretty sure that "weird air of coldness" is you, not them. you probobally see them as cold people (which your question show us) and its just you reacting to them.

4. i do have respect for others feelings. but its a toss up. should i respect other peoples feelings and let them continue to perpetuate a dangerous religion or call them out on it and force them back?

lets be honest. if you christians had no opposition from or side youd go back to burning witches at the stake and sending out crusades to kill beleivers of other religions...

you guys had your chance. it was called the Dark Ages. lets try for an age of elightenment.

and so far it seems you guys are one of the last big obstacles in the way. christianity to be specific. one big-a*s speed bump. slowing us and everything else down.

I'm cold because the a/c is on and the s/o would roast to death if I didn't have it on.

Seriously... look... if your belief teaches you wisdom, altruism, compassion and all that jazz then use it... work with it... don't worry about what anybody else thinks okay? Impressions are about perceptions and humans tend to project based on their perceptions, which are USUALLY incorrect and cause suffering, both for you and the person you're projecting upon.

Let it GO... cultivate a calm mind in the knowledge that you have and let go, return to the breath...

You cannot believe there is no God and believe you are a God at the same time, so that is not it.

Atheists would tend to stand away from a person who is a believer and makes that obvious, because they usually have had bad experiences with them or with their religion, so they would seem, well, standoffish.

As a Christian, Is stare at that question and go... What? I've met very warm and friendly atheists and in fact have one for a friend. You can not stereotype Atheists, or you will have to expect the same (think Ned Flanders). Most due believe they know everything, because knowledge and personal comfort are all they have left, they become their own gods, but don't stereotype people, it's a dangerous business!

I can think of two people I know personally, one is my co-worker, the other is my best friend who are both athiest. I am christian, but at one time I didn't believe there was a God.
I can say this for sure, I don't think its that all athiest are cold hearted people. The two I know are definately not. When they get angry about religion, I've had both of them tell me its because other people judge them and tell them they are going to hell.
I don't believe threatening damnation on anyone is the way to bring them to God.
