I've often noticed that people who direct questions to atheists use the singular noun, as in: "Atheist, why can't you see that god loves you?"

It happens much more frequently than chance would dictate, and I think it indicates an assumption on the part of "believers" that there is one monolithic, "borg-like" atheist mind, rather than a large number of individuals.

I suspect the "we" business is based on the assumption that once a week, all the atheists go to the cathedral of atheism and sit down not praying for an hour until the non-organist doesn't play a hymn.

Insomuch as the ones who prefer Pepsi to Coke constitute a demographic, so do the ones who prefer godlessness to godliness constitute a demographic, a group. In that group are found specific beliefs: exactly as one believes that cola with lemon tastes better than cola without lemon, the other believes that the things of God are of no value and instead value arguments asserting that there is no God at all.

Sorry, but while you're less of a "group" than, say, the church those who trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, you're still an identifiable "group."

Their are also Christians that don't want to be lumped together with other so called Christians that are not representing Jesus properly. If you say your atheist and if these people exist then it appears you are a group. inside all types of divisions of people their is good and bad. Persecution is aimed at every one. Is persecution not why non religious or nonspiritual people hang out in this forum?

It's human nature to lump everybody together. It seems foolish at times to generalize a whole group of people based on the actions of some. But unfortunately it does happen.

They are a group that don't believe.
If they believe (Romans 10) they wouldn't be of the Atheist group.
If you ask everyone in a football stadium to divide into believers and non-believers you would have 2 groups.
Same as dividing by fans of two teams.

When I was a devout Christian, I did the same thing. Actually, I thought of atheists as "them".

I now think that is a pretty stupid way to think.

If we were more like a "we" Athiest would be much more common and a bigger political power, but we seem to refuse to come together for our cause.

They lump but would but wish to be lumped. How many will insist that Catholics (or many other branches) don't count as Christians.
