An Emperor wanted to reward a servant for all his hard work and he asked the servant what he would like. The servant replied that all he wanted was some rice. The servant said that he was very fond of playing chess and suggested that on the first square of the chess board be put one grain of rice, on the second two times one grain (2 grains), on the third two times two (4 grains) on the fourth four times four (16 grains) and so on - each time multiplying the sum of grains on the previous square by itself. The Emperor happily agreed, but he was soon to regret his decision! What was the total amount of grains of rice that the servant recieved?

well since there are 64 squares on a chess board and you multiply each one by itself 64 times then add all the numbers together it would come out to...

This is a geometric series problem with a ratio of 2
its starts with 2^0, all the way to 2^63 (since there is 64 squares in a normal chessboard)

applying the sum of geometric series formula, S= a(1-r^n)/(1-r), where r is the ratio (r=2) and n is the number of terms (n=64) and a is the initial term (a=1), we get

S= 1.84467 x 10^19 grains of rice...

madness, so many grains... (how clever of the servant)

Could you at least give us how many squares there are on a chess board? And does he only use one color, or every square on the board? Sorry, I overthink.
