I have 2 female basset hound puppies. They are 4 months old. I have been trying to crate train them. They go to the bathroom constantly in there cage and on the floor when you let them out of the cage. I put them outside alot and leave them out for an hour or more at a time. I am getting very frustrated and i don't know what i'm doing wrong. I could really use some help with this.

Are they in the same crate? That could be an issue.

Also if the crates are too big they will go in them. The crate should be big enough for the puppy to turn around in. If the crate you have is too big you can try to block off part of the crate.

Also leaving them out for an hour... not really a good idea. Take them out when thet do go make a big fuss about what good puppys they are. I would even take them out alone a few times. That way they know that when they go out they are to go potty.

good luck.

Not every method works with every dog. Try discussing it with a trainer to identify the source of the problem; the crate could be the wrong size, your timing method might be off, or the dogs might simply respond better to a different approach. In theory any dog can be house-trained (unless they're genuinely retarded) but some are a little slower on the uptake than others.

Believe it or not puppies go to the bathroom on a schedule, it not just a random thing. Their bodies automatically eliminate whenever the gastrocolic reflex is triggered. Stretching of the stomach when the little ones eat triggers the reflex. As puppies get older they are able to overide the reflex and control when they eliminate.

Somewhere between 5 mins-1 hr after eating is when pups will go to the bathroom. About 5-10 mins BEFORE you know they probably have to go - start with 15 min- 30 minutes after eating, take them outside. When they eliminate tell them "good potty!!!"

Each dog's body is different so it may take you a few observations and trial and errors to get more precise. Make a chart and enter time fed/time of elimination--pee & poops. Soon you will know each of your puppies bathroom schedules.

Your pups will sniff and circle about 3 seconds before "the act." If you see them sniff and circle outside, tell them to "go potty" and praise them when they do it. Eventually saying "go potty" will be their cue to do it.

It's ok if you make a mad dash out to the special spot with them. You should have a special spot where you take them to do their business every time. Take your puppies out every two hours throughout the day. If they don't go, put them back in crate and try again in 20 minutes (don't leave them out for 1 hr, don't be mad at them they won't know why--don't be mad at yourself either, it's just a schedule thing--you will learn). Eventually you'll find out what their schedule is. It might be they can hold for 3-4 hours.

Take the puppies out first thing in the a.m. at the same time, and just before bedtime at the same time each eve.

In the house if you have some mistakes, use vinegar water in a spray bottle to disinfect and remove the urine amonia smell.

If your puppies make a mistake, it's your fault, you haven't charted their automatic trigger times--so don't show your temper, don't rub their noses in it.

If you are not specifically paying attention to your puppies (playing with them and *always* being observant of the sniff and circle routine), they should be in their crate. I'd say in the evening before 7pm is the last time they drink water for the night.

Best wishes for successful charting of their bodily functions!

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I agree with DUKEFENTON, you should talk to your local trainer, or if you got them from a breeder talk to him. He could have had the same problem!
