Are you planning on driving the car hard or just cruising? A 2.0 Jetta or GTI (97-present) are good choices that are pretty easy to maintain etc. They're definately not the fastest cars on earth though, and the transmissions can be problematic if your doing a lot of sporting driving. Hondas and Toyotas are both kings on reliability and at least Hondas are as I'm sure you're aware, extremely popular to modify. That can be a bad thing though as its hard to be unique with a Civic. But then again VWs are pretty popular too if that's your game. If you really want a fast car a Mitsubishi Eclipse 4wd Turbo can be fun, but they break parts once you make them fast, which is insanely easy to do, 1000 bucks can build a car that will blow the doors off many much more expensive cars.

I would not recommend any VW for a new driver. They are expensive to insure, unreliable and expensive to repair. While they are well engineered and perform well in their segment, reliability has fallen to near the bottom of the rankings. Not to mention you usually need special tools and software to fix them, and parts are not always available in a timely manner.
Mitsubishi's are cars people get when they can't afford Toyota's or Honda's - nothing worthwhile short of the Evo's
Mazda's are pretty good, the 3 is an excellent small car
Honda's are probably the best small cars, but are also kinda expensive to insure. At least they are reliable and hold their value.
Toyota's are very reliable, and are middle of the road as far as insurance costs go. The overall driving experience is not all that fun though as they do not handle all that well.

i own a repair shop ,and there's a lot of other cars ,that would make a good car,if your not interested in an American made car a Nissan sentra would make a real good car, they look good and drive really well, also, and are very dependable, some of the USA built cars now are doing as good as the foreign made ones are,so this might be something to think about, if i was going to choose from a vw,it would have to be a jetta, good luck i hope this helps.

VW's are (were) great -- the i949 thru 1977 models of the VW BUG that is. They were made well and were great fun to drive!!! But in todays' traffic, they are DEATH-TRAPS !!!!! I would never drive one on the roadways today. Maybe if you live in a little town of 2k to 5k people and NEVER GO on the ROADS TO BIG TOWNS !!!
If you want to drive in big town or city, get yourself a GREAT BIG HEAVY METAL CAR: 1950',60'S OR 70'S CADILLAC !!!! They have HUGE BACK-SEATS (GRIN !!!) and use the vw in small town. We all need big HM cars to protect us, I know, I was CRIPPLED by a DRUNK DRIVER and SUFFER EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE IN TERRIBLE PAIN -- so listen to me! Altho I was driving a so-called bigger car when I was hit, it was a late 80's model & not enough metal in it to saveme! So we all need HM car to protect us, but esp. new drivers need the HM car until you get several years of experience and even then we all still need that protection cuz some else will be the 1 to cripple or kill us!!! Keep the bug 4 small towns, plz!!! Save your own life !!! Acrippled mom hopes you'll listen!

Don't buy a VW, I have had one for 3 years now and its nickle and dime'n me to death.
The electronics SUCK, they have had problems with people's headlights blowing out, Mine the sterio only works when it wants to, the windows freeze shut, my gas door won't open anymore unless I use a screw driver and my lights blwo out at least one every other month.
thats just the starting list, i could go on forever.
Um..... p.s. its not an old vw either, its a 99. So.....

make certain a pair of issues. a million. The "it can not take place to me" syndrome. 2. The "it particularly is relaxing shall we circulate speedier" syndrome. 3. The "interest Boy physics" syndrome. This a problematic group to coach something to while not having them journey the discomfort. they're youthful, they're sturdy, they're obdurate, and what their pals think of of them is all that counts. they have no clue as to the physics in touch in using in a 2 ton merchandise at 70 mph, and are shocked while they have an coincidence. My wager is that understanding the guidelines of physics, like how lots of a tire is particularly on the floor at extreme speeds, the place the middle og gravity is in distinctive automobiles, the reaction circumstances, the braking distances, etc. in the event that they have been given this counsel in a format that does no longer project their short interest spans possibly extra of them would be around to assist me in my previous age.

All german cars are junk. Check out an old Mercedes or BMW. The electical system is junk, the valves burn out and they rust especially up there in clodhopper country.
