She is the perfect age to use a spoon!.
Buy a soft baby spoon because metal ones are too hard and too easy to gag on, and if she thrusts it too far in, it might hurt her.
Let her hold the baby spoon, and then hold her hand and guide the food to her mouth. Betcha she gets the knack of it really fast!

Why not give her a small spoon with some water in a plastic bowl to get her used to the motion ... my daughters just grabbed my hand when i was feeding them ... and they all started at different ages .. she will show you when she is ready ...around 18 months on average some are sooner some are later OR put the food on the spoon then place it in her hand so she can try and get it in her mouth ... have fun you will probably have to bath her after ..hehehehe

Hello, I'm Ella B and I would just like to give you some advice, by saying that your daughter should be able to start using a spoon at the age of 1. In the supermarket you should be able to buy some easy to use spoons made for toddlers, which will have better grip handles for your daughter instead of an adult spoon. Babies are copiers, I mean that they try to copy what their parents and older brothers and sisters do, so even if her co-ordination isn't perfect yet she should already be able to start trying, to use a spoon.

Let her play with a spoon while you are feeding her, she will eventually realize what she has in her hand will work the same way it does for you. She is at the right age to start teaching her how to feed herself with a spoon.

I'm a group leader for a nursery room (0 to 15 months). What i do is when they have a good pincer grip (picking up items with forefinger and thumb or able to pick up objects with their fingers) i give them a spoon to play with (but i encourage them to use the spoon correctly) and have enougher spoon to feed them. It's great because they are firstly awear of feeding with a spoon and as they progress they will relase what it is for and start using it properly. Takes lots of mess and patience but they get there
Oh yeah - the reason why i say good pincer grip is that all children develop differently - so when they are able to hold the spoon they are able to think about how to use it

I work at a daycare center and we give the children the spoon right after there first birthday. We encourage them to use it instead of there hands. By 18 months they usually have grasped the concept of the spoon but still use there hands on some occasions.

My son is 10 months and I give him a spoon sometimes now.. When I have time in the morning I take off his clothes and let him try to feed himself. he is excellent with finger foods, but very messy with with a spoon. It takes practice! I also give him water in a cup with no lid so that he can learn to drink from a cup. The muscles you use to drink from a cup with, are the same ones that you use to talk, so it could speed up speech development.

My son is the same age :))
I just let him play with his utensils. He has a fork and a spoon by Gerber. They're nice because they have nice big handles for grasping but they are metal just like our utensils. He loves them! But, hasn't figured them out ;)
He knows how it's supposed to work but can't get anything on either one.
We also do the same thing with a toothbrush. Just like him play around with it and usually I can get in there for a good swipe or two to clean them. I just want him to get used to these things.
I don't think they grasp the spoon/fork until 18-24 months. And by then it's all about - they want to do what your doing!

My son started using a spoon at 15 months but just now at 19 months he is getting good. Let her use a spoon as much as she can, it will take a wile it will get tossed on the floor but let her take her time and she will get it. Good for you though it is really important for her to learn this skill on her own!!!!
