I hate it when they just randomly start talking, because I startle rather easily, but also have you noticed that kids aren't any more self-entertained by them than non-talking books and toys? It's like people believe that kids will get into reading more if their books are interactive, when really the kids want the PARENT to read them the book. Or the parent to play with the toy truck, and make the noises it's supposed to make. I think talking toys and books erase all opportunity of creative play for the child. What's your opinion?

Right with you there buddy!

All of these sorts of things just remove any requirement for the child to use their imagination or make any kind of pro-active steps in their own development. Plus I am in Australia and ALL those talking horrible thingies have American voices! How silly is that?
I agree with you totally.

I would have to agree with you. All of this interactive crap is taking away from the kids' imagination. And to add to the annoying noises they really are not good for the ears. Studies have shown that some of the toys out there are worse on the ears than going to a concert and standing in front of the speakers.

I think that as long as you do read to your children any toy is fine. Just because the book makes noise doesn't mean you don't have to read it. The noise just keeps them occupied while you get something done. Sometimes children do need to entertain themselves and become independent. As long as there is balance, talking toys are okay. I let my son play with noisy toys during the day and they go off at night and he does quiet things.

I agree with the talking books- also they are total crap and kids don't even like them anyway.

Some singing toys are nice because I don't know a ton of kid's songs and I have a terrible voice too.

Things like the Fridge Phonics and Fridge Farm by Leap frog are cute.. good early learning tools for super young kids that would otherwise not need to know what the back of a pig looks like.

Hate it as the sounds annoy the crap out of me. I actually have put tape over some toys so they dont freak out my kids. I request toys that dont make noise as our speech therapist even said these toys dont make the kids need to make a sound as it makes it for them.

Our daughter isnt really into the talking toys or books either. Shes 2 1/2 so she wants barbie dolls and things like that. She likes using her imagination so we just dont buy crap that talks anymore! I think talking stuff is pointless as well!
