ProPlan is a decent food. When looking at ANY dog food label, look at the following:
~Protein: needs to be above 22% (preferrably 25%)
~First ingredient needs to be a meat of some kind (I.e. chicken, beef, lamb, etc...). In reference to health, it doesn't matter which meat it is, except if your dog has diggestion problems. Avoid foods that has corn meal, by-product, corn, etc... as their first ingredient.
~If your dog is a working dog, consistently a working dog, then you should considering purchasing a food that states is for working dogs or performance. This food as a higher protein content; if you feed this to your dog and its not a working dog, he/she will gain weight.
~Feed food appropriate for your dogs age (meaning, if he/she is a puppy, feed puppy food, if your dog is over eight, speaking for a German Shepherd sized dog, then feed a senior diet, etc...). Dog feed is age stage appropriate and at different time in dogs life they need for protein, or fiber, etc...

It doesn't matter the cost of the food, as long as you keep in those points I mad above. A few other pointers: dont feed canned food consistently (has nothing to do with the recall) as it can cause tarter, plaque buildup, tooth decay and so on, stay away from the soft foods (same reason as with canned food). Try to feed dry food consistently and give treats sparingly.

A dog eating the proper diet will have a shiny, dandruff free coat, is more likely to maintain a healthy immune system, is less likely to gain weight (which reduces the risk of developing hip dysplasia and other orthopaedic problems), is less likely to develop a "flea problem" or other parasite overload, your less likely to accrue huge vet bills to fight those previously named conditions, in the long run, the quality food is cheaper because you feed less of it (doesn't have the fillers and preservatives), and your dog will have smaller bowel movements to clean up in your yard (again, less fillers and preservatives, means the body is absorbing more of the food, and your dog has less preservative "crap" to poop).

No. A GSD needs special balanced food. Protein amounts are very important, and no GSD should be overweight. This will cause severe problems with the skeletal structure and could bring on a undiagnosed dyplasia problem.

Try holistic foods...like Royal Canin, Canidae, Burns or Soild Gold.

Talk to a reputable pet food supplier. And don't go near the foods that Vets sell.

ProPlan has just come out with a new food designed for German Shephers in mind. Maybe you should look into that one.

Yes unless he is having problems. The good thing is pro plan has several different diets each geared to either specific problems or breed sizes. Choose one that is appropriate.

Iams, Eukanuba, Hills, Science Diet, Pro-Plan, and Purina are NOT preservative free, ALL contain ethoxyquin. (Ethoxy was developed by Monsanto as a rubber hardener and insecticide). It is believed to cause liver and kidney dis-ease, cancer, immune dis-ease, skin problems, birth deformities, and thyroid problems. And be aware of food containing BHA and BHT avoid at all costs.
