Adobe Premiere is considered one of the "standards" for video editing software - along with Adobe AfterEffects, (http://www.adobe.com) you can do an incredible number of transitions, effects, etc. However due to the sheer power of Premiere, the "learning curve" to use the program can be somewhat daunting for the novice user. For an easier-to-use program, you can try ULead's VideoStudio (http://www.ulead.com) or the more-powerful Pinnacle Studio (http://www.pinnaclesys.com). Most of the people I know that do camera work professionally seem to prefer Pinnacle Studio for their home editing.

Pinnacle Systems Studio Plus 10.5 is really good. I also agree; Windows Movie Maker is awful. Windows Movie Maker is free, though.

Adobe Premiere Elements, Magix Movie Edit Pro, and Pinnacle Studio will all work. Download trial versions at their websites to find the one you like the best.

Personally, I use Sony Vegas 7 (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp). Sony Vegas is for everyone from novice to advanced. It is easy to learn and fun to created videos with!
You can render (save as a video format) in extremely high quality and even high definition! Perfect for YouTube videos. Good luck!

Kevin seems to be the only one that has hit the nail on the head.
Adobe Premiere for editing, Photoshop for overlays, and After Effects for all the lightsaber goodness you could ask for.

If you set your machine up to edit, and not surfing Internet, Studio Pinnacle is pretty user friendly and works great for short stuff like youtube.com. It's cheep too.
