I had a little Pom for 13 years, they are the best little dogs! =) I always kept her hair long, just had to brush her a lot. I have seen them shaved down in the summer, with just their head and "ruff" kept long. They look really cute that way, like a little lion! Ask your local groomer about the different styles for your pup. Congratulations on your new sweetie. Your lucky to have him (or her).

Keep their coat as it should be full and fluffy, that's what makes them a Pom. Otherwise they look like a chihuahua with a squirrel's tail. Take her/him in just for grooming around their potty part and that's all they professionally need.
Just brush it regularly.
If you want a short hair dog or one that has to be groomed, get a Pug or a Poodle

I don't know about the "styles" of there hair, bur the coat should be combed every three weeks followed by light brushing. Excessive grooming will damage the undercoat.
