I now live in the central valley California, and we are considering a move to Vancouver WA area and taking a job in Portland. Has anyone else left Cali, and what is the crime rate like up in Vancouver...also, is it really liberal or conservative, or kinda middle of the road? Thanks

Yep, I would call Vancouver, WA very middle of the road in every aspect. You might want to take note that if you live in WA but work in OR, you will still have to pay Oregon income tax on the Income earned (WA doesn't have an income tax). Oregon does not have a sales tax, but if you live in WA and make purchases in Oregon, you will still have to pay sales tax on big ticket items. That's right, the government gets you coming and going. Also, vehicles licensing is cheaper in Oregon.

So, basically, what I am saying is, if you want to work in Oregon, you might as well find a place to live in Oregon, as the commute won't be as brutal as trying to get over the bridges, and any savings in housing costs (which are minimal to begin with) won't compensate for the extra commuting and other costs.

So, unless you are just set on Vancouver because you love the city, or prefer the view on the WA side, I would not narrow your housing search to Vancouver, but include the entire Portland metro area.

I used to live in Vancouver so I feel the city is a good place to move to. The crime is definitely down from California.
I moved from LA area more than 7 yrs ago now. I liked it a lot.
As far as political climate, I wouldn't know much about that because to me it's not that big a deal. I mean does it really matter? It seems equal of both dem and repub though but really its not bad at all.
And yes, its got beautiful trees and smells so good up here I wouldn't be without it I am sure of that now. I am sure you'll like it and it's so much cleaner air, etc.

I have to second what the previous poster said. I see no reason why anyone would knowingly subject themselves to that commute (unless they're working on Hayden Island).

IMO, there's very little redeeming about Vancouver. It's just a BLAH suburb of one of the greatest cities in the country.

What about your question on the political disposition of Vancouver?

Portland is one of the greatest progressive cities in the country - does that bother you? I know the Central Valley is not a mecca of enlightenment, but trust me, there are still plenty of rocks for a conservative to hide under in the Portland area - try Clackamas County!

I visit Vancouver all the time...it's beautiful, very green, gorgeous trees!! I love it there! The crime rate isn't high at all, especially compared to California. I would say it is more in the middle, both conservative and liberal.
