woa good question
It's a fallen world, so therefore there really isn't any recourse (in 1st world countries as diverse as we are) to separate church and state. However, there should be room for choices.
This is obviously a way complex question, but overall, I'd say the role of the government should be to administer the country's affairs in the best intrest of the majority of people. (I'm shaking my head cause I really really don't know how that can happen in any sort of smooth manner)

Why does this apply to Christians? Not just any Christians, mind you, but REAL ones! Tell me, how do you define a REAL Christian?

Is Ted Haggard a REAL Christian?

Is the Pope one? How about some Amish guy that can't even answer this because of the whole no computer thing?

Just what does constitute a "Real Christian" in your book?

But to answer your question, the government exists to serve the needs of the people. That means using tax money to help hurricane victims instead of waging war overseas (just in case it's not obvious to you).

The role of Government [the people] should be to establish a common system of laws for the people to live by. Because people seldom live by the "laws " of their religion , there really has to be a system for them to live under. If this country were all Christians and would live by the two fundamental [most important ] commandments of their faith [ Love God , and Love thy neighbor as yourself] we wouldn't need "government" . But we are a nation of many religions and faiths ,hence the need for government.

To govern the people of the world.

They are appointed by God.

Even the ones we think are bad.

Rom 13:1 Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.
Rom 13:2 Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

I believe that government is our way to try to make better this world (to parallel the Noahide commandment concerning the establishment of courts of justice).

Still, as I look at all the governments we've tried, from the rule of one, to the rule of a few, to the rule of many, I realize that none of them have worked like they were supposed to. I believe that after we try the rule of all (a direct democracy, which I believe will not work either), we will finally reach the realization that humankind is not capable of leading itself, but needs God.

Of course, I hesitate calling myself a true Christian, for many other Christians disagree with my "liberal" beliefs--which happen to coincide with Judaism and Islam a little too close for comfort for them.

In the early days, there was no government as far as my God or the Hebrew God was concerned. BUT the Hebrews begged God for a king(government). This made God mad but he did go ahead and give the Hebrews a king. It's been down hill ever since then.

Government is to govern societies. To establish order and rule over the masses. A nation or group without the structure of some form of govenment is chaotic and accomplishes nothing.
