They were Soviets. Not all leaders were Russian. (In fact, Stalin was from Georgia, an on again, off again country. Now on again.)
Here are a couple military types. Of course, Stalin was C-in-C in all of the sense of the expression!
Georgi K. Zhukov -- Military Commander - Marshal - (Leningrad/Stalingrad and into Germany)
Ivan Stepanovich Konev -- Military Commander - Marshal - (Ukrainan Army leader Berlin)
