My parents sometimes go overboard. Today my mom called me on my way home from school to figure out my myspace password because she thought that i was downloading music from the internet as a way of "communication" with other people( someone apparently told her i was). Shouldn't my parents be able to come to me and talk to me about this first? What should i do?

Have you given them any reason not to trust you? I don't think your parents are going overboard however I suppose it could have waited for you to get home. I am sure they are just concerned about your welfare. There is a lot of bad stuff going on out there across the net. Have to be careful.

You shouldn't be so upset at your parents. They obviously love you and don't want to see any harm come to you.

It seems to me that they would not be so mistrusting if you did not give them a reason to. Are there any reasons you are not sharing that would make them not trust you?

Also, if you feel they should have come to you and talk to you, why didn't you open up and talk to THEM when she was trying to figure out your passsword? You could have used that as an opportunity to resolve this issue.

So I would sit them down and get this out in the open and try to solve it.

You may not appreciate this now, but your parents are doing the right thing. Monitoring you online activity is for your benefit. Sounds to me like they care about you a great deal and they take their protection job seriously. Allow them to do their part. Best thing to do is discuss with your mom what you want to do - educate. Do not jump to the doesn't trust me conclusion.

Trust and respect have to be earned and have to go both ways. You have to make sure you are showing respect to your parents and make sure you show them that you trust them by being open with them. Talk to them regularly about where you are going, who your friends are, what kinds of things you are doing on the internet. If they feel you are being honest with them and they know more about your life, they won't feel like they need to worry and check up on you.

I agree with the first answer- --- tell them everything they want to know and they will trust you.

there's no reason to have any secrets if there's no reason to have any secrets!
