I have a 2006 350Z and at my last oil change I was told I was 4 1/2 quarts low, I only had 1 quart in the pan. What could be causing this, its a brand new car.

I verified that the full 5.5 quarts were put in at the last change and I only drove 2400 miles.

Nissan warranty. Use it. And ask for a loaner from the Nissan dealer while they figure it out.

john I smell b.s to lose that much oil would cause some evidence of a leak or lost of oil . if it didn't leak out than where did it go does your car smoke ? I'm thinking no a new car smoking would make anyone see red !! my suggestion is to do a oil consumption test which means to verify oil level and check level at 300 mile intervals .. as a Nissan tech i will tell you if you had 1 quart of oil I would bet that the service engine light would come on due to vehicle uses oil pressure for variable valve timing control low oil volume will cause code int/tim sol bank one/two

whoa, you are in big trouble my friend. Do NOT touch anything on the car or examine anything. Keep records of any observations but do NOT pull any parts or try to check anything yourself, they will say you messed with it and it's your fault. This is a brand new car, all you should be doing is driving it!

Start keeping exact records of EVERYTHING and go to the dealer once a week to have your oil level checked, it is under warranty so it is free. Then, when they have blown off your complaints until after the warranty is up OR the engine explodes and then they tell you it is not covered you can go to the attorney general and the DMV investigative branch.

Meanwhile, start calling the corporation and using their contact info on theri website to start making that squeaking wheel sound so they contact their district corporate service manager and draw attention to the problem. Whine, whine and whine until you feel the need to seek cheese! This is a biggie and they will try to sweep it under the rug! Start making demands for a new engine NOW!

Alsi, very effective, is to gather all of your evidence and call you local news station and ask for their consumer advocate. Media pressure is the best motivator on the planet.

Start getting ready for a fight. Contact your insurance company to let them know what is going on, they will gladly give you some tips.

How many miles are on the car? How do you drive it?
Have you performed any mods to it?

The only things I can think of are:
1. leaky oil plug at the oil pan
2. leaky oil pan gasket
3. leaky valve cover gaskets
4. PCV sstem sucking in too much oil....open your airbox and inspect....if oil is in there in copious amounts, your PCV valve may need to be altered by the dealer.
5. The most unlikely but covered by factory...Worn piston rings, unscrew the oil filler cap while engine is in idle...put your hand up against the opening...if you feel rythmic puffs
then you have too much blowby and probably should have the dealer take a compression test.
6. Your cylinder head valve oil seals are leaking into the intake runners....

The best way to tell is to pull a spark plug....and check for carbon or oily deposits...

What do your exhaust pipes look like? Do you get blue smoke when you goose the throttle?

if you only had 1 quart one in the pan your engine will be dieing soon were did you get the oil change. if its the dealer you are covered because they did not tighten the plug. or check the oil filter for leaks. before you picked it up.

It could be a pcv valve not working correctly, or you could have a oil leak. keep an eye where you park the car and see if there is any leaks. Also check with dealer and see if they have any problems with oil leaks.
