These companies all have these specific requirements in the range of 500-650. I guess i am unfamiliar with the brands. Are any of these worth staying clear of? At the moment i am leaning towards a Trek 3900Disc, Giant Boulder Disc, or Mongoose Tyax Elite.

Stay away from Mongoose GT Apollo and DiamondBack. I too am partial to the Giant. I have a Giant Trance and I love it. For what you want to spend you might be better off watching Craig's list or EBay and get a good used bike. I picked up an '07 Trek 1000 road bike that was hardly used at all for $400. If you are patient you can get a screamin deal.

Giant is the best out of all these manufacturers. You get the most bang for your bike. My friend and i bought bikes at the same time for the same price. Mine was a specialized and his was a Giant, his bike is better in just about everyway.

I say Giant too. They are really reliable and can be repaired easily. The Giant Boulder Disc is an awesome bike and you will be really happy with it.
