The fat statue everyone thinks is Buddha, is someone else named Ho'tei. Buddha had to have been fairly thin because he ate only what was given to him. Buddha was born to rich parents who doted on him. He became aware of the terrible suffering of all beings and left home with the purpose of finding a way to stop all that suffering. He fasted and meditated and he became awake. He was so amazing that folks gathered around to learn to become awake also. Of course when Buddha was born there was no Buddhism, since he founded that system of thought. Just as Jesus wasn't born Christian, but was a Jew. Einstein said of all the religions, he liked Buddhism. You might enjoy reading about it yourself, it's very scientific for a religion. Buddha said to see for yourself. If you meet Buddha on the road, kill him. Because the Buddha that is outside yourself is not the real Buddha. I think the study of Buddhism will improve the practice of any religion, because it helps you train your mind.

He was born a prince. Buddha may of been represented as "plump" becasue he was a prince before a buddhist although most say buddha is actually very thin as portrayed in some tibetan? art.

Buddha was actually very thin, the fat Buddha statues are of the Buddha Mettreya, not the founder of Buddhism. And his name was Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha means enlightened one, it is a title, not a name...

He was born as a Hindu and his name was Siddharta Guatama (might be wrong with the spelling).

Those who were fascinated by his teachings began calling him Buddha and then it became a religion, Buddhism.
