Ego. It's just inpossible for some people to think that all the hard work and dedication actually did the job. Mere mortals couldn't possibly accomplish such a victory without divine intervention!

Screw that. I'm riding the Triple Bypass this year, for no other reason but that I've never done it before. It's a one-day bicycle ride covering 120 miles and three Colorado mountain passes. I'll be doing over 10,000' of climbing, and it starts at around 8,000' above sea level. It may kick my butt, but I'm getting ready and I'll do it without God.

First of all, I agree with your theology, and I don't think God interferes in such mundane things as football games.

Having said that -

In classical Christian thought, there are seven kinds of prayer:

adoration
praise
thanksgiving
penitence
oblation
intercession, and
petition

The prayer you mention is of the third type. The person who prays feels, rightly or wrongly, there was more to the win than an individual or team effort, and wants to give thanks for this blessing life has given, and the blessing is attributed to God. We may question the person's theology, but we cannot question the intent.

Because they go to church on Sunday and listen to the preacher read the naive prayer and prophecy portions of the Bible and ignore the 'We're getting our asses kicked by Assyria, Greece, Persia, Babylon and Rome' sections.

They honestly have no clue that there isn't even a direct connection between prayer and success in the Bible.

Mostly it's PRAYER followed by IT'S THE ASSYRIANS! RUUUUUN!

God can be all places and do all things at once. It's not something we can really comprehend with finite human minds. He wants each of us to succeed as individuals.

So, when we thank Him, it's to give Him glory for giving us strength that we do not have on our own. Even when we lose, we should thank Him for personal achievements and helping us through.

I don't know about the unsaved but Christians don't pray that way. We pray for safety and that the fellowship of the event will bring us closer... Jim

Because god controls everything and that is the common belief. When their team wins it just feels like god empowered them to victory in order to please you ( THE FAN )

What concerns me is that they are keeping God hopping making sure their team wins and he never has time to deal with world hunger and war. ;-)
