One last thing, the only thing to get her active is that you throw a treat and she'll go get it but she'll only run for the max of 5 treats.

I have a pretty fat cat too until we put him through a very strict diet. This how you do it: divide the amount of food you've been giving him into 4 portions and just disregard the 2 of them. Then, give the cat only little portions at a time, or since cats are mostly active during night, give the whole portion after you come from school. He should lose weight because of ketosis.

Losing a pound won't be too too difficult. I had a 25 pound cat to deal with!

I don't know what you're feeding her now, but I'm going to guess it's some brand of dry food that you get at the supermarket.

What I recommend is switching her to canned food. A good one that you can only buy in the pet stores. It may be inconvenient at first, but once you find one that she likes, you can buy it by the case so you don't have to go out that often.

Go to the link below and print it out. There's a list of the very best canned foods you can buy - although some are harder to find that others. You may have to do a bit of calling around to find out what stores sell which foods - or you can visit their sites because most of them will tell you where to find their products in your area.

The great thing about feeding canned food as a weight loss method is that the cat doesn't have to starve! She won't keep bugging you for more food.

Since you only have a pound, you might be able to achieve the weight loss by cutting back on portions. But kitty might be cranky and pester you for more food all the time.

But if you're feeding a full cup, you could try cutting back to 3/4 and see if that helps.

my suggestion to you would be first, take her to your vet and have her examined because if there is no logical explanation for her weight gain (other than the obvious of course) and that would be over feeding her and/or feeding her table food, she may have an underlying medical problem that you cannot know without the appropriate blood tests and physical exam by your vet. It is more and more common today to find cats especially that have feline diabetes. This is a very serious disease for felines and should be treated if diagnosed with it. I would rule that out first and then go from there. If it is not diabetes it could be as simple as perhaps changing her to a low calorie diet and definitely no people food!

All these answers are good. Excercise, and specific food, only at twice a day. cats shouldn't feed whenever they want. Growingup I had a cat and lived on a farm. She got eat whenever she wanted, however also hunted and loved outside all day long. She was able to work her food off. Now I have two inside city cats and after you fix them, its hard to keep their weight down. I feed them quarter cup of food in the am, and a quarter in the pm. The dicections on the sieds of bags......too much. A vet told me something that makes sense. The more you feed, they more you buy. They are in the food selling buisness. Half cup of food for an inside cat in a day is plenty. Ive been doing this for months now, and they aren't starving. When your cat cries for treats , throw a few kernals of food around so she has to collect them by walking, and hopefully it will get her moving a little. She doesnt own you, you own her. Just becasue she cries for treats does not mean she should get them. When a kid cries at teh grocercy store, does that mean you buy him everything he wants? No. Dicipline. Itll be hard not caving into your cat, I know, I own two, they are very persuavive. Good Luck.

The best thing to do is to cut back on her food and/or treats. Don't free-feed. Pick specific times and amounts to feed her 2-3 times a day.

Try different things to get her interested in moving around more. Exp; make her come to you if she wants attention or something that you would normally bring to her, move her food and water where it is less accessable (higher up-not too high to begin with) so that she has to learn to jump up or down, and find something she likes to play with. Try a piece of yarn rolled up in a ball. These will burns calories.

Did you ask your vet for ideas? They are the best resource.

Good luck.

Go to any good pet supply store and ask for weight management food for adult cats. I use Nutro brand, but they have so many kinds. My cat Natasha who is also a little overweight and I have put her on 1/2 can of Wiskers wet food in chicken dinner, which she loves. Then don't give cat anything till about 6:00 PM and then give the weight management dry food. That is it. No food in her dish in the middle of the night. Then in the morning, give the 1/2 can of canned cat food.

Are you asking for diet advice? Only feed her once or twice a day, at YOUR time. Don't leave her bowl out so she can just stroll over and feast. Let her outside to romp around. Bye some exercise toys. Use toys like feather rods, battery powered mice and other things to get her active. Have fun. :)

I got cat food called Innova, it's low carb, so it seems closer to a carnivore's diet, I mean if you think about it, cats in nature wouldn't eat potatoes or flour much.

So try that, and exercise your cat, if you can't then get a door mounted mouse thing for her to play with on her own. She's built to be active, so get her active.
