The site is probably irritating him. It could become infected if you don't take him to a vet for preventive care. It'll be easier on him (and cheaper for you) if you go ahead and get him there as soon as possible.

If his paw is still bothering him take him in to get rechecked. Occasionally cats will regrow their nails from the base of the amputated joint. The deformed nail grows underneath the skin until it breaks through and can cause an infection. It's best to let the vet take a look at it to make sure that this isn't what's happening.

declawing is very cruel and vicious thing to do to a cat. Lot's of cat's experiance pain after and many stop using the litter box because of the pain the experiance form scratching. Take him to the vet and see what they can do for the poor animal. If you declawed it I would recomend not doing it to another animal. People who declaw cat's have not done their research on it. If you don't like the scratching next time get a different animal.

Exactly why you shouldn't declaw a cat. It's cruel!!! It's like having the tips of your fingers cut off! Your poor cat needs to go to the vet and get his poor paw looked at!
FYI Soft paws or Soft claws are a kind alternative to declawing!

Always I find when my pets are asleep is a good time to examine things like paws and ears and such...they don't mind when I'm gentle since it must feel like I'm just loving them...but whenever I am in doubt I run to the vet...unlike us one mistake can be tooooo costly...there are real bleeders aroung the paws so call the vet and trust the advice.

I would suggest that you clip any excess fur around the claw area. The extra skin area is probably where he has pulled out the fur. Also check the pads for fur and clip the excess. Do not clip the fur between the toe pads as it will only come back thicker. I hope this helps.

The kitty may have a fungal problem. Only your vet can tell you for sure. Good luck
