Hitting bottom is an expression sometimes used to describe the condition where one no longer has ability to cope with life, often due to drugs or alcohol, and no longer has former friends, is rejected by ones own family, has no job or place to live. Life seems not worth living anymore, there is no place left to go once one has gone down to the bottom of everything that is positive and hopeful. One frequently hears reformed drug or alcoholic say they couldn't stop until they had hit bottom. Some times it might be a CEO of a big company that has gone down from a high level of living to being a homeless derelict.
Some people think only by hitting bottom can some people rise up again. Hope you never are in that position.
