I am going to Germany and I am 18 years old. I want to know if I can get into a bar and have a beer or something. I also have a friend who is 17. I want to know if he would be able to go into a bar and have a beer too.

First of all: you can drink beer when you are 16. You may enter a bar aged 16 but must leave at midnight. When you are 18 you are free to drink whatever you want to wherever you want to. As most landlords in big cities are over-cautious they usually do not allow guests 17 and younger. Wherever in Germany you go: find some locals they will be able to tell you which pub is save to visit for your friend. Mind you: if he looks a lot older than it won't be a problem either. You can buy alcohol on every corner. So - please do not drink too much ;-) Have fun!

I have a good friend from there and he said that 16 to drink beer and wine but 18 to drink the heavy stuff. Your friend who is 17 might be able to get away with heavy liquior

I was in Germany last year--when I was 17--and I was able to drink wine, so I'm sure you and your friend will be able to have a beer.

The legal drinking age is 16, but most of the time their standard is 'over the bar, drink what you can'
