There are two possibilities here. THe first one is that you haven't used this document in a while, and it has been filed under permanent ROM to save RAM space. ROM is Read Only Memory. It saves it, but you cannot change the file. Your hard drive is ROM. Normally, a document is in, or can be converted to RAM. Ram is random access memory. The difference is that you can edit RAM, but only view ROM. If that is the case, you will have a VERY toguh time undoing this. The other possbility is that your Microsoft Word app has expired. If your computer came with Word on it, then it was a trial subscription. Once the trial is over, the software converts into permanent ROM. THis gives you full access to the files, but you cannot change them. IF that is the case, you can copy the document, open wordpad (under programs) and paste. This is a free App that is included with all PCs, and you can edit it from there.

Open the tools menu and select options. Click on the security tab and you'll see the settings to lock or unlock a document.
