If the parents are not married will they only put the mother's name on the certificate?

They put both parents' names on a child's birth certificate, whether they are married or not. It is proof identity, and proof of relationship. The only time the father's name is not on the certificate is if the mother does not name the father because of more than on possibility, or because she does not know.

I would have never believed this but several of my friends have had babies over the last few years and in two different hospitals the birth certificates didnt have a place for the father's name at all - married or not. My friends are both married and the father's were given a seperate "certificate of paternity" to sign. My one friends husband was furious but the hospital had "phased out" father's on the certificates - sign of the times?

No they'll put both the father and mother's names on the birth certificate and then both parents will sign it. Unless the mother doesn't know who the father is then "Unknown" will be in the father's place on the birth certificate.

No matter what thy always put the biological mothers name and biological fathers name on the certificate, unless the mother has no idea who the father is.
