In my platoon at Benning, we for the most part cleaned the barracks, those who went to the Catholic service cleaned first and the protestant ones cleaned the rest, those of us who didn't go cleaned the whole time, then went and hid and too a nap.

Just finished basic a few months ago. A lot of people in my flight weren't very religious and they went anyways. Just go to the main gathering and it's really not that religious anyways. It's great just to go and relax, but hey if you don't want to do that our TI found things for those people who wanted to stay back at the barracks. Who knows maybe your TI won't show up till 4pm on sundays. Sometimes ours did that. So if that is so, you might be just lounging around in the barracks or he could go make you pull weeds. It all depends man, but seriously just go to the main ceremony or wherever everyone else goes. They usually show a movie clip that is very moving or a very special guest speaker. I enjoyed it.....gl in basic though. It's not that bad.

Not sure about the other services, but in Marine Basic Training, you pretty much got the morning off to right letters, read letters, read the paper, get uniforms squared away, etc. The Drill Instructors really didn't mess with us on Sunday Mornings.

US Navy Basic in 1985... those of us who chose not to attend services stayed in the barracks and did personal laundry, letter-writing, studying etc.
They can't make you attend religious services... recent Air Force Academy issues pointed that out. As I had to in 1985... since there was no Rabbi at NRTC Orlando.

If you don't go to church, you usually get personal time or "study time". In my experience, even if you aren't religious, go to church anyway. It's an hour where you can get away from the barracks, not be messed with, you can gather your thoughts and recharge your batteries for the coming week and be left alone. It's definitely time well spent- just to get somne peace and quiet!!!

Let me get this straight...
after (probably) six days of intense basic training and perhaps Sunday morning is the only free time you'll be getting, you need to ask what to do?
Spitshine your boots.
Brasso your brass.
Prepare for inspection.
Write letters home.
Study your training manual.
or
just kickback, listen to some tunes
and daydream.

When I was in basic traaining in the Marine Corps, those that did not attend chapel stayed in the barracks and wrote letters, did laundry, shined shoes, etc.
It was quite a long time ago.

I was in your position 22 years ago. I chose not to attend services and was left in the barracks to study my general orders, polish my boots, and write letters home.
